HI you have all been so helpful in the past. I thought I would fire up this old beast and give it a shot. It freezes up and is very slow, It is xp pro, I look forward to seeing you work maGic again. Nothing on this machine is sacred so we can delete anything. Thanks Dean

247.52 Mb Total Physical Memory | 36.14 Mb Available Physical Memory | 14.60% Memory free

First big issue I see is the lack of memory. XP has a sweet spot of 1 gig of memory especially if your video is on the motherboard and not a add on card.

Free drive space does not seem to be a issue with 85% still free.
I would like to try the following to just check some things.

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Download Auslogics Defrag from the link in my signature below. Auslogics Defrag in my opinion is better because:

It does a more comprehensive job at Defragging
It will actually show you what it is doing
At the end of working it will show you how much speed you picked up
You can view a online log of the files that Auslogics defragged
Please do not run any other Auslogics programs other then this one as they may cause unwanted results.

As I mentioned in my first post, the best way to increase your speed is by increasing your memory to 1 gig total. This will allow the system to open and close programs faster as well as allow you to open more then one at a time. Please try the below and let me know the results.

Go to HERE and run the Crucial online scanner.
This will give you the exact memory configuration for your system.
You do not have to buy the memory from there, but write down the information and if you need assistance in purchasing the upgrade memory GTG can assist with suggestions also.

Can you send me the link for your Crucial Memory results please?

Also is this a desktop?
Branded system like Dell or HP?
If branded what make and model and then I can look up the memory specs for it.
