Hi,

I have one software that I use that frequently freezes up and says (not responding). I've tried to stop it in task manager, but it won't stop. Is there any way to fix this?

Thanks a lot,

Steve

Please help us to help you.

What software is this you're referring to please? What version of Windows are you running?

Hi,

I'm running Vista 32 bit. The software is called Case Catalyst. It's used in courtroom stenography. the closest thing to compare it to would be Word in that it's used mostly with writing and editing text.

Thank you

Hello,

Has this application only just started doing this?

If so, you may want to consider doing a clean up, defrag, and update (specifically graphics drivers)

If not, then you should really upgrade your hardware to accommodate the software's demands. In the short term, you can give it a higher priority which would give you a marked improvement in speeds, but would cause other applications to suffer while it was running.

Open up the Task Manager and find the process under image name then right click it and set priority. (Don't set it to realtime, as that will most likely crash the PC)

As my colleague risingphoenix1985 has suggested and also

Has it ever run Ok on this computer and IF NOT does the computer meet the requirements

http://www.stenograp...rGuidelines.pdf

AND am I correct in thinking that you have the same program installed on a Dell running Windows7 Home Premium 64 bit and does it work OK on that computer.

and also may I apologise for our failure to respond to your post regarding this on 12 January.
Occasionally due to the vast number of posts on GeekstoGo, one does get overlooked.
This is a very seldom occurrence.
Nevertheless please accept my apologies.

Finally I came in on the thread, mainly to apologise as above and to mention the system requirements etc.
Please continue with my colleague risingphoenix1985.
You will be in good hands.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the response. No need to apologize for its promptness as I appreciate the help you offer.

Anyway, I did cleanup and am about to defragment. I am also change settings in task manager. I guess will use the software and see how it is responding before I reply again. Also, I updated graphics driver and it seems some things may not have been able to download. I am copy and pasting the update log in case there is anything you can glean from it.

Hello,

Looking through the log I have noticed something a little strange... The Microsoft Visual C++ YYYY are out of date.

Have you done a Windows Update recently?

I've checked my PC and can see that I'm running the version you are trying to install which suggests that the problem is on your PC.

Just to add to the log file, can you open up your Event Viewer (Windows key + R -> eventvwr) Expand the "Windows Logs" and have a look in "Application" and "System" for any Errors or Warnings.

Let me know what you find.

Hi,

Yeah, there are many errors and/or warnings. Not sure of the easiest way to give you a log of them all.

Also, I should have told you that this problem is a couple of months old and that I have uninstalled/reinstalled the software once, if that means anything.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Steve,

Please follow this guidance for event viewer.
  • Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso VEW and save it to your Desktop:
  • Double-click VEW.exe
  • Under 'Select log to query', select (as appropriate):
    • Application
    • System
  • Under 'Select type to list', select (as appropriate):
    • Error
    • Information
    • Warning
On the first run please select only ERROR and only Application
I will ask for others if I need them.
If you select Error Warning and Information it will swamp us.
Then use the 'Date of events' or 'Number of events' as follows:

YOU may when using the program generally either:
  • Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 3 in the 1 to 20 box (or any number from 1 to 20)
    Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.
    OR
  • Click the radio button for 'Date of events'
In the From: boxes type yesterday's date
In the To: boxes type today's date
    Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.
  • IN THIS CASE would you please use the dates and go from when you know the error has occurred say 14th March for a couple of days.
  • Then I can ask you for other logs if I need them

Please post the Output log in your next reply as a copy and paste please of the opened log.

Hello,

Can you download it from another PC and then copy it over to the one you are working on?

OR disable Norton, whilst you download and run.
ONLY of course for that.

Also, re my post 5, I do not think you ever actually answered that.
Has that software ever run on this computer please and does your computer meet the rerquirements as I sent you.

Please do run the event analysis that my colleague has asked for, but I would also recommend that UNLESS it has run satisfactorily with Norton, you also consider trying to run it with Norton disabled.

Sorry I have not replied. I was working on getting another computer for download as suggested.

To answer your earlier post, yes, it has worked on this computer fine for a few years now and, yes, it does meet the requirements. Wonder if the computer is just getting old (about 5 years old), but no other software has the (not responding) warning.

From my post 12

OR disable Norton, whilst you download and run.
ONLY of course for that.

Did you try this aspect of my advice please.
If so and that did not work then I would try uninstalling Norton.

If Norton is the free edition I would uninstall it and then use this

https://www-secure.s...n=1&pvid=f-home
As a temporary measure, as obviously you need an AV program I would install MSE from here it is free.
