I have two laptops, one I've had for a few years which has Windows XP SP3 32-bit and the other I've just bought which has Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. As I've been using the old laptop the most lately, I decided to concentrate on that. But because I put the same offending software on the new laptop as described below, I suspect it may have the same problem. Let me know if you would like me to check the new laptop, and if so, if I should open a new topic or if I should stay in this topic.

Recently several of the website pages I have visited have been replaced with something with the URL pagenotfound.co.uk and the adverts on some other websites have been replaced as well.

A web search has turned up similar problems - but on Firefox, which I don’t have - I only have Internet Explorer 8 (can't upgrade to IE9 on XP). But the common link in a lot of these cases is Lavasoft Ad-Aware, which I do have, and specifically their browser toolbar, which I have as well. I updated Ad-Aware on 10th January 2012 and installed the toolbar at the same time. I didn't know about the problems with the toolbar at the time or I wouldn't have installed that.

I’m planning to uninstall the toolbar, but should I uninstall Ad-Aware itself as well? I have AVG 2012 and Spybot Search & Destroy on my old laptop and Norton Internet Security 2012 and Spybot Search and Destroy on my new laptop, so I’m OK for security. I update these two programs regularly.

I last scanned for viruses using AVG on 10th January 2012 and spyware with Ad-aware and Spybot S&D the same day. I've downloaded OTL today and the log file follows. Let me know if you'd like me to do a full scan - I only did the quick scan.

Thank you in advance.

Hi, welcome to GeeksToGo! I'm havredave, and I'll do my best to help you fix whatever it is that ails your computer.

I'm sorry it's taken so long for someone to get back to you!

Just a few things before we begin, to ease the process on both of us:
  • Please don't run any scanning or cleaning software without my direction, as it can make things worse and take longer in the long run.
  • Please be patient. A good cleaning can take quite a while, and usually involves many steps before it is complete. I may not post back quickly, because I often have to research issues or run ideas by my peers for a more thorough fix.
  • You may wish to print out each instruction post in case you lose Internet connectivity (using safe mode, for example), so you can complete the fix.
  • If you have any question on any step, or if something doesn't work as described, please stop and ask before we proceed. Better safe than sorry!
  • Please paste your logs into your replies instead of attaching them. This makes it far easier to review. Feel free to use multiple replies if you need to.
  • Please stick with me until I let you know we're finished. Even if the machine is running better, it doesn't mean it's clean.

If you still need help, please complete the following instructions.

As it's been a while since your scans were done, please do the following to generate some fresh ones for me.

First:

Download a new copy of OTL to your Desktop.
  • Double click on the OTL icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Copy the text from the codeblock below (ctrl-c) and paste it (ctrl-v) into the Custom Scans/Fixes box.

    netsvcs
    drives
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    %appdata%\*.exe
    %USERPROFILE%\..|smtmp;true;true;true /FP
    %ProgramFiles%\Common Files\ComObjects\*.* /s
    %ProgramFiles%(x86)\Common Files\ComObjects\*.* /s
    /md5start
    consrv.dll
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    Userinit.exe
    svchost.exe
    volsnap.*
    /md5stop
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\NetBT /s
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\NetBIOS /s
    C:\Windows\assembly\tmp\U\*.* /s
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /rs
    hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /64 /rs
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Put a checkmark in the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Put checkmarks in the LOP Check and Purity Check checkboxes.
  • Click the 'Use SafeList' radio button in the 'Extra Registry' section.
  • Click the Run Scan button. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time and post them in your topic

Next:

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.

Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it

If it asks you to download virus definitions, please say yes.

Click the "Scan" button to start scan. It could take a while, especially for the virus scan part. Do not let it fix anything, just do the scan.

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

At last!

Before I do what you are asking, when you say "Download a new copy of OTL to your Desktop", do you mean I should download OTL again, as I haven't uninstalled the copy of OTL I have already downloaded?

Thank you.

I do mean download a new, fresh OTL. :)

OTL isn't "installed". It's a stand-alone program that doesn't install itself; rather it simply runs.

When you're downloading, your web browser should ask if you want to overwrite the existing OTL.exe. Yes, you do!

Hope to hear from you soon. :)

Thanks for the reply.

I'll do what you asked me to do tomorrow as it's evening here, and you said aswMBR could take a while.

Yes, it sure can take a while. Take your time, it's fine with me. :)

Do keep in mind though that if long enough time passes between posts with logs (since things change on a computer rather often), I'll have to ask for new logs. Not too big a deal, and should only be an issue if it's several days between.

I'll be here when you're ready. :)

I've done the OTL scan, as you asked. The logs follow.

I am going to do the aswMBR scan now and will put the log for that in my next post.

I forgot to let you know I'd be away for the weekend

Sorry about that. I'll be going over your logs tomorrow morning (MST), and will post back tomorrow.

So I'm answering earlier than I thought... :whistling:

Ok, your logs look pretty good. No visible malware, or things making me think we should dig.

I'm guessing that when you see those pagenotfound.co.uk entries, it's because either DNS isn't getting a response in a reasonable amount of time, thus can't load whatever element has been replaced, or Ad-Aware/Spybot has the URL of the element blocked. What happens when you reload the page(s) in question? Do they then load, or no?

I haven't heard of issues with the Ad-Aware toolbar, but I also don't really see much of a need for any toolbars, personally. If you believe it's causing problem, feel free to remove it and see if the problem is rectified.

I did notice something else on your machine, related to Ad-Aware, that I'm going to research a bit. Tell me, are you using a free or paid version of Ad-Aware?

I would recommend installing and using the free version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware as well. I personally feel it's better right now than Spybot S&D or Ad-Aware at catching/removing malicious software. Take care to only download the free version (unless you want the paid version, in which case I'd definitely remove Ad-Aware first). Also take care with whatever download site Malwarebytes' sends you to. A couple of them (CNET for example) sometimes have misleading download buttons for other products. As of tonight, the file name you download would be called mbam-setup-1.60.1.1000.exe.

For a little maintenance:

Your version of Adobe Reader, 9.5.0, is out of date. The current is 10.1.2, and must be installed by going to Adobe's website and installing it yourself, rather than relying on the automatic updater. It won't automatically update from v9 to v10. Do be sure to uncheck whatever freebie Adobe is offering prior to pressing the download button, unless you really want the offered item.

Let me know if removing the Ad-Aware toolbar rectifies the issue. I'd be only partially surprised, but it's information I'd like to have for the future. :)

I'm not sure what happens when I reload a pagenotfound.co.uk page but I'll check. I did say in my first post that this particular issue has been found to be causing problems for other people.

As for Ad-aware, I'm using the free version.

Thanks for telling me about Malwarebytes and Adobe Reader. I'll follow these up.

Hm, I'm missing where you mentioned that the pagenotfound.co.uk is causing trouble for other people, but that's OK. Have you called your ISP by any chance, to ask if that's a default not found page for their service? If it is, the problem is likely network related rather than your machine.

Is the version of Ad-Aware you're using called "Ad-Aware Free Antivirus+" ?

If so, you'll want to either remove Ad-Aware or AVG. The version of Ad-Aware I indicated has antivirus built in, and will most certainly conflict with AVG. The thing I noticed earlier was an antivirus component of Ad-Aware, so I'm suspecting you do have the Antivirus+ version installed.

Let me know which version of Ad-Aware that was, and if you removed it; also, whether or not your ISP knows about the issue of pagenotfound.co.uk. We can go forward with the other machine too if you like, once we've finished up this one. I'm thinking we're close. :)

The version of Ad-aware I have is 9.6.0, and I've had a look at it, and it isn't called "Ad-aware Free Antivirus+". I haven't removed it yet.

I don't think the pagenotfound.co.uk page is my ISP's default "not found" page.

Yes, I'd like to work on my other laptop, but looking at your profile, I wonder whether you know anything about Windows 7, unless, of course you haven't updated it.

My profile is what I currently use, not what I'm fluent with - though it's also true that I haven't updated it in a while. I'll just add that, since I finally did upgrade at home. I've been using Windows 7 since before it was released for purchase. :)

What's going on with the other laptop?
