I run my desktop and laptop at home and take my laptop with me when I substitute teach. At home, my desktop is hooked up by ethernet cable to the router. I run my laptop the same way when I sub as they don't have wireless.

In both cases when I boot up the machines and then try the internet it won't connect up and I am forced to disable then enable the network adapter before it lets me connect.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening and what I can do about it?

just got to school and hooked up the LAN cable and had to do it again ... disable the adapter and then enable to connect ... am I the ONLY one with this problem?

Hi Mark,

I had something similar a while back and fixed it by disabling my startup items. I know that sounds strange and that the starting of programs when the PC boots should have nothing to do with the network adapter but it did.

If you would like to give it a try, you do the same thing by pressing the Windows key + the letter "R". Type msconfig in the box and press enter. On the box that pops up click the start up tab and un-check as many of the applications that you can.

You could in theory un-check the entire list as it shouldn't break the PC. If you need a hand identifying applications in the list let me know.

If the above doesn't work, let me know and I'll try a couple of other things.

sorry it took so long to get back to you, but I've been busy. I disabled my start-up items and that did not work on either computer.

Sounds like there is something else happening in the background, I will need to have a look at your Event Viewer...

Please follow this guidance for event viewer.

• Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso VEW and save it to your Desktop:
• Double-click VEW.exe
• Under 'Select log to query', select the following:
  
  • Application
  • System
• Under 'Select type to list', select the following:
  
  • Error
  • Warning

On the first run please select only ERROR and only System
Then use the 'Date of events':

• Click the radio button for 'Date of events'
  In the From: boxes type the date that the PC was last shutdown.
  In the To: boxes type today's date
  Then click the Run button.
  Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply as a copy and paste please of the opened log.

Cannot find the C:\VEW.txt file.

That's strange I have never had that happen. It could be that it's running at the root of your drive and for some reason it is not allowed to create a file.

Could you try saving it to your desktop and running it from there?

saved it to my desktop and ran it and got the same thing ... this is how i tried to run it the first time

Hello,

We shall try plan B then in that case.

1. Press the Windows Key and the letter "R" on your keyboard.
2. Type eventvwr and press enter.
3. Wait a minute for everything to load then expand "Windows Logs" in the top left pane.
4. Click on the log called "System" and scroll down the list.
5. Look under the column called "Level" for "Error" and "Warnings" for the time since you last rebooted (I want to capture what happens to your PC during a startup)
6. Click on each Error and Warning that you find and let me know what they say.

Looks like there is a DNS problem there. Could you do the following for me?

Windows key + "R" type cmd and press enter

In the box that has just opened, can you type ipconfig /all (make sure you include the space between the g and the /)

Copy or do a screenshot of the output.

when I type that in and hit open the screen (black 'dos' looking) pops up and then immediately disappears.

That's strange, can you do the following...

1. Windows key + "R"
2. Type regedit
I can't stress enough how careful you have to be in the Registry Editor, even the smallest change can cause the system to break. Please follow these next instructions very carefully
3. In the left hand pane expand "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"
4. Expand "SOFTWARE"
5. Expand "Microsoft"
6. Click "Command Processor"
7. Take a screenshot of what you see in the right hand pane and let me see.

That's exactly what I have on my system, Can you open the start menu and select all programs. Open Accessories and select the Command Prompt?
