hello and per the instructions, OTL.txt follows. the program generated a second txt file titled "Extras.Txt" and is available to post if needed.

current symptoms:
Start menu "search" module won't load at all.
browser loads are unbearably long.
applications and programs are taking forever plus a minute to load.
(3 to 10 minutes on average)

all scans are completing and reporting -0- results of infection.
MBAM, Zone Alarm Security Suite, Windows Defender & CCleaner.

MBAM & Zone scans are taking twice as long as normal to complete.
1.5 hrs increased to 3+ hrs, even though the file count hasn't changed.
for some reason unknown to me, Zone Alarm won't run in safe mode nor do i have a clue how to correct it.

this notification appears continually ... "Update Progress ... ABORTED: Another installer or an update installation is currently running." ... but, i have no idea which installer it's referencing.

*** -- Update Progress notification even appears immediately following a re-start and when there is -0- activity on the machine. the notification will appear repeatedly (as many as 10+ times) over the course of a day, even when the only thing active is the desktop.

another notification regarding virtual memory being low appears quite often.
am not sure if i should or how to adjust this.

when this machine was received, system restore was turned off so i turned it back on, but now i'm wondering if that was such a good idea.

also, Unresponsive script errors frequently appear when cleaning the cache.
it seems to be affiliated with google chrome although it wasn't installed (nor is it wanted)

"Script: chrome://browser/content/sanitize.js:135"
there are more Script notices like the above but i didn't copy all of them.
i chose to Stop Script rather Continue, but have no idea how to correct it.

recently, MSWorks refused to convert data files written in MSWord.

the only three indicators of how/when the problem first appeared that i can think of are ...
1. almost immediately following an install of Logitech board/mouse/speaker combo software / SetPoint 4.60a
did Zone Alarm pick up a heuristic anomaly and quarantined it successfully.

2. following a forced-shut down last week, an unknown data string was unresponsive and the only part of it i could remember was {4466 ...} so i searched it with CCleaner, then googled the full string and was linked back to these and other forums with reference to a "Win32: FunLove" ?? virus/trojan/other messedup-ware

3. about the same time as completing the above install, an Epson printer install and a re-install of Adobe Reader & Flash, i also reset System Restore to active (as it was off) and set a new restore point.

it was around 24hrs or less that the first "Abort Install" notices started appearing. this was about a week ago.
Setpoint software was removed and wireless mouse & keyboard are not currently in use.

since none of the malware/virus/spyware scans are indicating a problem, i don't know where to begin.
so, i've run OTL as instructed and disabled ZASS first.
also, fresh MBAM, ZASS and Defender scans have been run - all report -0- results.

thanks in advance for all your time, effort, attention and assistance.
i look forward to your guidance resolving this minus further frustrations.
gloria

Hello gmouse and welcome to my office here at G2G! :)

My nick is maliprog and I'll be your technical support on this issue. Before we start please read my notes carefully:

NOTE:
  • Malware removal is NOT instantaneous, most infections require several courses of action to completely eradicate.
  • Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean
  • Kindly follow my instructions in the order posted. Order is crucial in cleaning process.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans or fix on your own without my direction.
  • Please read all of my response through at least once before attempting to follow the procedures described.
  • If there's anything you don't understand or isn't totally clear, please come back to me for clarification.
  • Please do not attach any log files to your replies unless I specifically ask you. Instead please copy and paste so as to include the log in your reply.
  • You must reply within 3 days or your topic will be closed

We will start with system tweak before we start with fixes.

Step 1

Please enable Windows Update
  • Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
  • Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the following options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them option.
  • Click OK button

Step 2

Please uninstall ZoneAlarm untill the end of this fix.

Step 3

Let's set you virtual memory

  • Right-clicking the My Computer icon and click on Properties
  • Click the Advanced System Settings link then click the Settings button under Performance
  • Click the Advanced tab then click Change... button
  • "Check" Automatically manage paging file size for all drives option
  • Confirm it with Apply/OK button(s)
  • Restart you system after this

Step 4

Please download ResetDMS from the link bellow. You must right click on the link and choose Save as.... Save it as resetdma.vbs on your desktop

ResetDMS

Double click it to run it.
You must Restart your system now.

Step 5

Please post Extras.txt in your next reply. I need to see it too.

Step 6

NOTE: This fix is custom made for this system only and for current system state! Don't try to run it on another system!

Please close all running programs and Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :OTL
    O4 - HKLM..\Run: [] File not found
    O4 - HKLM..\Run: [ISW] File not found
    [2011/03/24 22:33:27 | 000,000,475 | ---- | C] () -- C:\Program Files\0324201122332704.bat
    [2011/03/24 22:17:45 | 000,000,451 | ---- | C] () -- C:\Program Files\0324201122174560.bat

    :Files
    ipconfig /flushdns /c

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Post the fix log it produces in your next reply or you can find it in C:\_OTL\MovedFiles

Step 7

Please don't forget to include these items in your reply:

  • OTL Extras log
  • OTL log
It would be helpful if you could post each log in separate post

well hello maliprog and thanks for your prompt response.
i wish i could return the favor but after printing your instructions and beginning at step 1, i have failed to complete step 2 -- apparently i need help.

for reasons unknown to me, Zone Alarm will not uninstall.
there is no option for it on the Start Menu listing.
Add/Remove programs does nothing. CCleaner does nothing and Safe mode states there is no installer to perform the function / restart in normal and try again. i did, still nothing except the following ...

there were 3 ZA entries - the Toolbar entry deleted without error or issue via CCleaner.
- the SpyBlocker entry presented an error in both Add/Remove & CCleaner that states "Error loading C:\PROGRA~1\ZONEAL~1\bar\1.bin\SpyBlock.dll The specified module could not be found." so it remains.
- the main Zone Alarm Security entry will not uninstall.

fyi, ZA was not active (yes, i turned it off, first) and i've not run into this difficulty previously.
any ideas so we can proceed ??

oh, in case this helps, here is the Extras.txt file from the original OTL run.

so, i wandered over to the ZA forums and found a few posts relating to a clean UNinstall of ZAES 10 and am wondering if i should follow the instructions provided or perhaps you have a preferred method.
here is one link to the instructions.
in the mean time, i'll be patiently awaiting your advice.

OK. Leave ZoneAlarm for now on your system. We'll try to remove it later through other fixes. Skip this step and continue with others.

Hi gmouse,

Please let me know status after these steps. What problems remained etc.

Step 1

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.

  • Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it
  • Click the "Scan" button to start scan
  • On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post aswMBR.txt in your next reply
  • Also, ZIP MBR.dat it creates and attach it to your next reply

Step 2

Download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters.
  • Check the boxes beside:

    • Verify Driver Digital Signature
    • Detect TDLFS file system
  • then click OK.
  • Click the Start Scan button to start the scan.
  • If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results and offer three (3) options.
  • Ensure Cure is selected for malicious objects

    Posted Image
  • Click Continue then Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  • Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
A report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste its contents on your next reply.

Step 3

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop *

IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

    Posted Image

    Posted Image
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Step 4

Please don't forget to include these items in your reply:

  • aswMBR log
  • TDSSKiller log
  • Combofix log
It would be helpful if you could post each log in separate post

wow, before running this next serious of fixes, a few things i noticed right away were the "home" page changed to a Conduit Search engine i've not seen before and the yahoo home page is a newer version and layout than i'm used to using. (am not really liking this new layout, either)

running the Clear History option from the Tools menu still generates an UNresponsive script error that reads ... Script: chrome://browser/content/sanitize.js:135 ... i'll usually choose Stop Script option but would prefer to remove it.

generally, when opening a browser (either Mozilla or IE), yahoo home page is the landing point, following the above processes, neither the initial landing or the page link (home button) open yahoo. both link directly to the Conduit search mentioned above.

{ps, don't know for sure what Conduit is nor do i want it to continue}
address for conduit --> http://search.condui...SearchSource=13

the Abort Process notification still appearing but not as frequently as before.

if you recall, i mentioned the ZA toolbar deleted via CCleaner, however, following one of the previous restarts, it's back.

system reboots are completing faster than when we began.

well now, ComboFix ran quicker than expected so here's the results.
only changes noticed at this point are the browser loading much quicker and a correct home page landing to yahoo. am not available to surf or spend any significant time online til later.

oooops, almost forgot --> following stage 3, a notification appeared indicating PEV.exe encountered a problem.
clicked Don't Send Report option and CF continued to run.

hello maliprog,
thanks so much for all your help thus far. i really thought we had made good progress and then i started the machine today. here's an update but without your latest instructions completed (just saw it - VRT)

the initial startup went smoother and quicker than recently, however, the home page landed at that Conduit search engine again and this script error also appeared.

Script: file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Owner/Application%20Data/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/knrhtc1k.default/extensions/%7B91da5e8a-3318-4f8c-b67e-5964de3ab546%7D/modules/IO.jsm:425

i did a little surfing last evening and much to my surprise, no freezes, no Abort Process notices and smooth page advances were noticed immediately.

the Yahoo sign-in page still seems to be re-directed but by deleting the data string after the "?", the https (secure) login page appears.
//login.yahoo.com/config/login?.src=fpctx&.intl=us&.done=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.yahoo.com%2F

well, during the online session last eve, no Abort notices appeared, but, after a fresh startup today, one has already appeared.
Also, it was necessary to type the address for yahoo to get there and the Home button links to Conduit again.

once at Yahoo, this Unresponsive Script notice appeared ... Script: chrome://divxhtml5/content/script.js:6 ... chose Stop rather Continue.
also, Mozilla crashed before i could complete a sign-in.

haven't noticed anything else right away but will as i see it.
thanks again and i'm off to run the VRT.
g

edit to add: i just noticed this line in your instructions "attach to your next post" ... please clarify if that should be zipped, posted or neither.

well that was odd, the VRT didn't download properly or something. tried twice and got same results.
2 files downloaded with similar names ... setup_11.0.0.1245.x01_2012_03_30_17_23.exe.part which Windows declared it cannot open this file -- then, the same file name minus the .part produced this notice, "is not a valid Win32 application"

also, the download site hung-up and a (Not Responding) notice appeared for several minutes before the page finally closed.

will try once again after a re-start but thought you should know about this failure.

Leave VRT for now. We'll come back to it later. Let's see what we have left:

  • Run OTL.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open notepad window. OTL.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of this file, and post it with your next reply.

hmmm, wish i had read that first but surprisingly, the third attempt was a success with VRT.
i cleaned the cache, ran ATF & CCleaner, turned off sys/restore and re-started. the download completed and was ran as instructed. took about 3 hrs and produced -0- results.
from the final page:
269534 objects scanned
2hr 49 minute duration
No Threats Detected.

also, i searched the registry for "Conduit" entries and deleted what i found, however, the home page info is still consistently changed to the Conduit address (mentioned previously) with each re-start.

here is the recent OTL.txt and no Extras file was produced.
(ps - does it matter that OTL was downloaded to the My Downloads file rather the Desktop?)
i hadn't noticed that the download instruction was automatic to that file but have since changed it to "ask".
