Macboatmaster,
Sorry for the long wait, in the time period, I have changed from Vista to XP Professional. Now that I am at a restarted position, what software would you recommend to start?

For example, Anti Virus Software, I have Microsoft Security Essentials as you suggested. For regular maintenance, should I stick to the disk cleaner and defrag already on my computer or do you suggest any other regular maintenance software. Also in your experience, what do you find to be the best web browser?

Well as I think I said before MSE has never let me down.
I used Firefox, but I have now left it on all four computers and gone back to IE
Firefox for me has become a constant cycle of new editions and in my opinion released too quickly and still with known bugs.

That is ONLY my opinion.

As to maintenance please see this
http://www.geekstogo...-your-computer/
selecting of course Xp where it is O/S based

To add some protection I use this
http://www.google.co...PGQ7KWmAAEqBXug

when I say add protection, it will NOT actually protect YOU but it is great for seeing what sort of site you are opening if you do not know the site.

If you use them regularly the windows discleanup and the windows defrag - analyse first are excellent.

If you leave the defrag until it is overdue then Windows defrag is like watching grass grow

For the normal user defrag at 7% is my opinion
It is pointless below 5% as it will be back to that within the hour or so

Finally Malwarebytes FREE edition does not provide real time protection but is a great second scan and has the ability on right click to scan individual files before you download them - very useful if someone send you an attachment.
Frequently of course, sent completely innocently and without any knowledge that it was infected.

It is always best to PREVENT rather than try and resolve the problem.

Out of date JAVA and Adobe are two of the main security risks and being more and more exploited.

Great, thanks a lot for all of your assistance. My computer has been running much better since I switched back to XP, so I dont think there is much more in this topic.

Thanks Again,
