Good evening,

I'm having a little trouble with a game called Empires: Dawn of the Modern World.

I am currently running Windows 7 64-bit.

I have installed a retail copy of the game, click the desktop icon to load the game; the loading intro picture pops up, then the screen goes black and flashes back to the desktop with a popup saying "Empires_DMW.exe" has stopped working"

I have searched google for an answer to this with no results as of yet. Am hoping you maybe have a suggestion or two for me? :)

I tried installing patches 1.0, 1.2 and 1.3 but with the same result as stated above.

Any ideas?
Thanks for your time.

Hi,

Thank you for the welcome. It has never run on this PC, that may be why. The only thing that made me think it would work is that it does run on my laptop which has the same operating system.
I can't see why it would work there, and not here.

Thanks.

When you say the SAME O/S is it 64 bit as the info from the manufacturer and Microsoft suggest that it will run OK on 32 bit

The other options are
Compatability Mode or
XP on virtual machine depending on which Windows you have
http://www.sevenforu...tall-setup.html

http://windows.micro...sion-of-Windows

If the laptop is 64 bit Windows as well then another program, add on to browser are clashing with the game.
At this juncture I should say I am not a gamer and know nothing whatesover about the game
Have you tried the forum for that game.

If as I say the laptop is 64 bit windows try it in clean boot on this computer

Very helpful post, thank you.
The laptop is 64-bit too.

I've been unable to locate a forum for the actual game.

I've tried compatibility mode for all different operating systems and with administrator mode but no luck.

I will take a look at the virtual machine and the 'clean boot' options you listed below and get back to you.

Thanks for the time you've taken to help me!

I would try the clean boot first

Is this computer also a branded one if so please post make and full model
and the details of the graphics adaptor and which driver please.
Go Device Manager expand display adaptor, double click to open, on the general tab what are the details and on the driver tab, version please and date.

Re Forum
As I said I am not a gamer, but I take it from what I have read that it is a no longer supported game.

Well I've tried a clean boot with no startup services except for the Microsoft ones and it still doesn't work.

Is it safe to try disabling all of them aswell?

Thanks.

Oh, I'm sorry I forgot to mention and for not replying for a while.

This computer is not branded, I built it.
The laptop however, was a Toshiba built one.

OK graphics:

NVIDIA GeForce TTX 560
Location: PCI bus 1, device 0, function 0

Driver:
Provider: NVIDIA
Date: 29/02/2012
Version: 8.17.12.9610
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher

Hope that's the information you were after.

Thanks.

Well, with the best will in the world I do not think I am going to be able to help you

http://cdn.steampowe...df?t=1276640342

I am sure you already have it, but in case you do not.

One suggestion I have found was to install IN COMPATABILITY mode and right click and run as admin, then copy both CD`s to different folders.
Then install the first on the hard drive and then when it asks for the second point it to the other folder.

The other reports I have found all refer back to the general idea that it will run on some 64 bit windows 7 and not on others and it simply depends on the whole nature of the setup

Virtual Machine seems to have the most favourable results

Sorry I cannot help further, as I said at the start gaming is a foreign subject to me, but many problems can be sorted by general tech analysis.
Mainly however when it crashes whilst playing, rather than loading.

You may wish to look at event viewer to see if there is any report connected with it
  • Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso VEW and save it to your Desktop:
  • Double-click VEW.exe
  • Under 'Select log to query', select (as appropriate):
    • Application
    • System
  • Under 'Select type to list', select (as appropriate):
    • Error
    • Information
    • Warning
On the first run please select only ERROR and only Application
You can run this choosing any of the dates or number of events.
If you select Error Warning and Information it will swamp us.
Then use the 'Date of events' or 'Number of events' as follows:

Either:
  • Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 3 in the 1 to 20 box (or any number from 1 to 20)
    Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.
  • Click the radio button for 'Date of events'
In the From: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) say a week ago pls.
In the To: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) 30/3/12
    Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.
It makes it easier to read the results, although event viewer itself in Windows 7 is quite easy to use direct from that.
Control Panel Administrative Tools, Event Viewer.

If you expand the items on the left pane and then when you have sepected what you wish, you may click the colum heading and that will sort the Source, Date, Level.
On the right hand side you will see FIND
click that and type Empires or Dawn of the Modern World
on the application in Windows logs.
You may just be lucky that if it is recorded it will give you a clue.

If you do feel I can be of further assistance if you find anything please do post

Hi, wow taken me a long time to get round to doing this ;)

I loaded up VEW.exe and ticked application and error as you said to do the first time. Then I ran the game exe and it crashes as usual.
I then clicked run on VEW and it waited for a few seconds then said cannot find some text file, do I wish to create a new one, I said yes and it gave me a blank notepad file.

Did I do something wrong?

Many Thanks,
