I can't load any software through my DVD drive. When I install the disk the yellow light flashes for a few seconds but nothing happens after that. I clicked on MY COMPUTER the D: drive to to view files but there are no files displayed. I've tried loading 2 different software programs and got same result. I installed a music CD and it played... BTW I'm running windows XP on a desk top

Are you sure it is a dvd\cdrom or is it just a cdrom?

CD-RW drive

This is why it won't play dvd's because it is not a dvd drive but only cd drive. To double check open My Computer then go to Properties and on the new window click on Dvd\cdrom drives There should be a model number for your drive there. Can you post that model number please?

Ye[ just a cdrom so it won't play dvd's. Is this a desktop or laptop, branded name, make and model if this applies.

OK you should be able to replace it inexpensively.
Is it the original cdrom drive and if so what is the make and model of gateway? I can then find the connection type and then find a suitable replacement for you.

I'm going to guess it is a IDE connection on it unless you want to open the side and see if it is a grey ribbon or a red cable that is connected to the back of the drive.
