Frequently, after the HP splash screen, XP comes up with a black "Please Wait..." screen.
The delay time varies from short to long but the compuater finally boots normally.

I find lots of posts where the computer freezes with the "Please Wait" screen, but I don't have
that problem, the computer always boots normally after the wait period.

Any ideas will be appreciated.

Thanks

Computer is HP Pavilion P2-1105-PC
Intel Pentium G620t
4 gig RAM
225 /gb hard drive wiwth 204 GB available

Haven't tried any fix because I don't know where to start. I originally
though Microsoft might have changed their Windows automatic updates to
install at boot rather than at shutdown but checked dates and they didn't jibe.

I ran and saved the autoruns file but not sure I have it attached here since it
says error you arenj't permitted to upload this kind of file

I saved it as a txt file but it was all garble. I'll do it again,
maybe you have a way of deciphering it?

Open Autoruns, click on "Logon" tab, and UN-check:

+ "SunJavaUpdateSched"
+ "MSMSGS"
+ "swg"

When done restart computer and then:

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Download Auslogics Defrag from the link in my signature below. Auslogics Defrag in my opinion is better because:

It does a more comprehensive job at Defragging
It will actually show you what it is doing
At the end of working it will show you how much speed you picked up
You can view a online log of the files that Auslogics defragged
Please do not run any other Auslogics programs other then this one as they may cause unwanted results.

After running TFC the computer booted but froze before
showing all the programs I use at start. Waited quite
a while to see if it would do anything. Finally turned it
off and used Roll Back to a previous point.

Still getting the "Please Wait" screen sometimes at boot.

No, decided to pass on that for a while. Am working on the theory
that something running at that level must be Microsoft or an
anti-virus program that can run a boot scan. Have added a ticket
at Avast asking them if it could be their problem. Have also
unchecked Avast from the start menu so it won't start next time
I boot. Can't stop it from the Task Manager.

Avast has to be told to run a boot scan and I don't think you would have it running every boot.
If it is not in your startup then you need to check your msconfig startup to make sure it is still not activated there.

Lets see what you have in your startup

Please click on
Start and then to Run
Type in msconfig and press Enter
Now click on Startups
Then uncheck everything and restart.
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.
If system boots correctly and is running smoothly and faster then we have a startup problem
Try going back into msconfig and check one item and reboot
Keep doing that till you have found the problem or all are finally checked.
Post back with the results

Disabled everything in startup, rebooted to the same "Please Wait" screen
Back to the drawing board
I've had enough of computers for today, will sleep on it and
think about it again tomorrow
