Recently my Dell Inspiron E1505 with Windows XP Media had the display freeze with vertical lines all through it. I had to crash the laptop. When I restarted it, it briefly showed a display of the start up screen severly broken up with more vertical lines then it went to a black screen. I attempted to connect it to a standard monitor with the same vertical lines on the start up screen. Then the screen showed faint symbols at the top left of the screen, then attempted to reboot. I attempted to boot in safe mode but I get nothing but a black screen. Everything had been running fine up until this point. PLEASE HELP!

Sounds like the video chip on the system board has died. You will need to replace the system board but to be sure you should take it to a reputable repair shop and have them check it out for you. It will run you $120+ for the system board plus the cost of labor to replace it if it is bad.

It's 5 years old or so and may not be worth spending a lot of money on when you can get a new one for $500 to %600.
