Not enough space to do a backup windows 7 pro - why?

Backup starts and runs for a minute or so then stops with the error not enough space.
I'm trying to backup on a 250gb usb hd that is empty.

Whats going on here?

right click on my computer...manage...disk management...drag the window open enough to see everything and get a screenshot for us...
