Let's try a USB flash drive instead then.

First of all, please delete your copy of OTLPEStd.exe (it may be corrupted).

IMPORTANT:
You will need a flash drive with a size of 512 Mb or bigger. Make sure that you do not leave anything important on the flash drive, as all data on it will be deleted during the following steps.

    • Download OTLPEStd.exe from the following link and save it to your Desktop: mirror1.
    • Download eeepcfr.zip from the following link and save it to your Desktop: the mirror
    • Finally, if you do not have a file archiver like 7-zip or Winrar installed, please download 7-zip from the following link and install it: the mirror
  • Once you have 7-zip install, decompress OTLPEStd.exe by rightclicking on the folder and choosing the options shown in the picture below. Please use a dedicated folder, for example OTLPE, on your Desktop

    Posted Image

  • Open the folder OTLPEStd which will be created in the same location as OTLPEStd.exe and right-click OTLPE_New_Std.iso. Select 7-Zip and from the submenu select Extract files... and extract the content onto your Desktop in a OTLPE folder:

    Posted Image

  • Please also decompress eeepcfr to your systemroot (usually C:\).
  • Empty the flash drive you want to install OTLPE on.
  • Go to C:\eeecpfr and double-click usb_prep8.cmd to launch it.
  • Press any key when asked to in the black window that opens.
  • As indicated in the image, make sure you have selected the correct flash drive, before proceeding.
For Drive Label: type in OTLPE.
Under Source Path to built BartPE/WinPE Files click ... and select the folder OTLPE that you created on your Desktop.
    Finally check Enable File Copy.

    Posted Image

  • Click on Start, accept the disclaimers and wait for the program to finish.
Your bootable flash drive should now be ready!

Then put the flash drive in the infected PC. And from there on, the instructions are the same as from the CD. (only you have to boot from the USB instead of the CD of course)

Trying to boot from USB gives me an error that says remove disks or other media. Press any key to restart. In the BIOS I have it set to boot USB first, CD second, HDD third.

Hi,

gammo asked me to take a look at this thread. Do you know if Hitman Pro deleted anything else? I see that you've also run TDSSKiller before, did that find anything?

Hitman Pro found one other Trojan that it said it was successful at removing along with a few tracking cookies. When it found the MBR issue it said it had to restart to remove it and now I am here. Everytime I try to boot up, I come to where Windows Logo appears, Startup Repair runs on its own and says that it can't fix the issues automatically. I couldn't get TDSSkiller to run at all, I tried to rename it multiple times to see if that was an issue but after asking for permission to run on my system it wouldn't start up. Spyware Doctor found the TDSS rootkit and said it was successful at removing it, but each time I ran the scan again an hour later it still found the same file. Microsoft Security Essentials also found the TDSS, but could not remove it. AVG, Malwarebytes, and Microsoft Malicious Software Removal tool all found nothing beyond tracking cookies.

I also ran Superantispyware and that detected the SMART_HDD and it said it was successful at removing that threat. It also tried to restore my start menu and desktop image which were missing even after running unhide.exe, but that wasn't successful either.

Hi,

what was the other thing Hitman Pro removed, do you remember? The fact that windows startup repair starts shows that the problem is not with the MBR but somewhere within Windows and there we need to figure out where. Hence it would be good to know what Hitmon Pro deleted.

If I remember right, it was Alureon. It's been almost two weeks now so I don't remember exactly. Since the MBR was the last thing that is what sticks in my head.

Under Diagnosis and Repair details the Boot Status Test has a Root cause found: Boot Status indicates that the OS booted successfully. Internalt state check has a root cause: Startup Repair has tried several times but still cannot determine the cause of the problem.

Hi,

Please start the system and tap F10 repeatedly, you will then be taken to the "Edit Boot Options" screen.

Please DO NOT edit anything, just report back what you see.

You should see this:

Edit Windows boot options for: Windows 7

Path: \Windows\System32\winload.exe

Partition: 1
Hard Disk: {Some random looking numbers}

[ /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN
<--This is the bit I am most interested in. Please tell me exactly what is shown after this statement.

Hi,

that looks as it should. Have you tried starting the machine in safe mode, does that work?

I would like you to get me an mbr dump with xpud, do you still have the flash drive? If not please recreate it as follows, if you still have it skip straight to step 8:

Download http://unetbootin.so...dows-latest.exe & http://noahdfear.net.../xpud-0.9.2.iso to the desktop of your clean computer
  • Insert your USB drive
  • Press Start > My Computer > right click your USB drive > choose Format > Quick format
  • Double click the unetbootin-xpud-windows-387.exe that you just downloaded
  • Press Run then OK and make sure to select the downloaded ISO file as source and don't let the installer get the linux from th internet.
  • It will install a little bootable OS on your USB
  • After it has completed do not choose to reboot the clean computer simply close the installer
  • Remove the USB and insert it in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer
  • Press F12 and choose to boot from the USB
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • You will see a list of folders: sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB, please open that and confirm it's your flash drive.
  • If it is your flash drive press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type in: dd if=/dev/sda of=MBRbackup.zip bs=512 count=1 and hit Enter.

MBRbackup.zip should be created on your flash drive, please attach it to your next reply.
