sony laptop Fn keys not working

the problem i have is i did a reformart of my hard drive with win xp pro....got all my drivers installed....but when i hit the Fn + F4 for the volume it pops up on the screen....then i am suppose to use the arrow keys to adjust it ....up key or right key....nothing changes.....even when I hit Fn+F5 for brightness it pops up on the screen arrow keys do nothing to change it.....it is a sony vaio pcg-grt170.....thanks for your help
