First order of business is there any data that needs to be saved before we do anything? This can be accomplished by using a Linux Live cd to gain access to the data as long as the hard drive is mechanically working.

Your bug check code indicates the following.

0x0000007B: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
Windows lost access to the system partition or boot volume during the startup process. Typical causes: Installing incorrect device drivers when installing or upgrading storage adapter hardware, or a virus.

You won't be able to do a startup repair if there is something physically wrong with the hard drive. This is why I asked in my original post about getting data saved before we do anything further. I will ask again is there data your friend wants to make sure is saved before we do anything else due to a possible hard drive failing or a virus of some sort.

We haven't determined how dead it is yet so I would like to check the hard drive out first.

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

Thanks to Broni for the instructions

Then use the Seagate Seatools DOS cd ISO version. It works with most brands of hard drives.

There should be a basic and a extended test. The test will take a bit to run if you run the correct one.

OK have you tried to boot to the Advance Boot Menu and click on Last Know Good Configuration That Worked?
You get there the same way you would to try and boot into Safe Mode.
