Email forwarding

I was cleaning out my email yesterday and found several emails from google and Bigfoot email forwarding that said my email had been successfully forwarded to another email account of someone I know. Apparently it's been being forwarded for two years and I never knew it. When I asked the person about it they said it wasn't possible and that it was just spam. Can spam do that?
