Hi,
I'm running XP pro and I am experiencing some wiered behaviour with 'search'.
I'm sure if I put in search for 'all or part of the file name' in drive C for example it would go through once and then finish with the little dog looking all pleased with itself!

Now my machine just keeps going and the results just go in circles never ending.
Coiuld anybody please explain if there is some setting I have messed about with?
TIA.
Tom.

is it the same for all searches or certain kinds of files or just text in a document...
you can go here to Kelly's Korner
http://www.kellys-ko...xp.com/xp_s.htm

scroll down to...Search - Doesn't Work...see if you can fix it using one of his scripts...

Thanks Happyrock, there's certainly a lot of information on there.
Hopefully I can track down what I need, I do like a good challenge as long as I get there in the end.

Cheers.

unfortuanately I cannot find the 'Search - Doesn't Work' maybe it is worded slightly different but there is so much on there I have worn myself out for the moment.

Strange, I came across this fix which was written by you for someone with the same problem back in 2009.
The files copied ok from sp2 cd but the problem still persists.

Have you or anyone else have any more suggestions, or maybe a bit more advice on what i exactly need from the kellys-ko site?
the problem exsists with when searching for all type of files.
As far as I know my machine is free of viruses etc although some maleware did creep in a month or so ago and was eradicated AFAIK?

try this...
1. Log on to the computer by using an account with administrator permissions.
2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install. This reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses.

Still no joy after reinstallment the srchasst file.
I'll plug away for another day or two. It's not a big problem really, just a minor inconveniance and something to keep me occupied for a while.
Thanks for the info.

The Final Outcome....

I've given up and gone with a freeware search program called 'Everywhere'!

On this particular problem 'Life is too short'.
Thanks again for your help.

I personally use google desktop for my searches...it indexes your hard drives and if you have a gmail account it will index it and show both in the results...searches take less than a second and has auto complete so you usually only have to type a few letters and the results from auto complete show below the search box...just click on the one you want and it opens or right click on the one you want and select open folder...its been a HUGE time saver for me...
