I have Dell XPS Gen5 with XP Pro, SP3, dual hard drives with Raid. I have Opera, Firefox, Chrome and IE Explorer.

The system has been working fine until a few days ago. There have been some Flash crashes in the past, but only occasionally. Flash updates usually cured the problem.

Last few days Firefox and Opera have been crashing like crazy. This morning after Firefox crashed Windows Explorer crashed as well. I couldn't get Windows explorer to stay on long enough to go through Start Shut Down, I had to push and hold the power button until the system shut down. When I restarted my Raid control came up and said "Verifying and repairing" for the array.

I have scanned with Kaspersky AV and used Fix Cleaner, Driver Update, and Microsoft Fix-It Center to no avail.

If anybody has a solution I would greatly appreciate it.

Does it happen when you boot to Safe Mode?

I have not tried booting in safe mode. After the Raid control finished "Verifying and repairing" the array this morning, the entire system as worked flawlessly - including the browsers.

May have been a glitch in the raid array. Try it for a day or two and let us know how everything is working. This topic remains open so I will get a email notification when you post.

Since my last post, the system has been running ok. Last night when I went to shut down, I got an error. The system went through normal shut down but then came up with a blue screen:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I had to push and hold the button to shut it down.

I had normal boot today.

It has also been taking a long time to shut down, like 2 to 3 minutes.

It would help if you could get the complete bug error code. Then I could see what caused the error.
We may find out by doing each of the below programs.



Download WhoCrashed from the link in my signature below
This program checks for any drivers which may have been causing your computer to crash....

Click on the file you just downloaded and run it.
    Put a tick in Accept then click on Next
    Put a tick in the Don't create a start menu folder then click Next
    Put a tick in Create a Desktop Icon then click on Install and make sure there is a tick in Launch Whocrashed before clicking Finish
    Click Analyze
    It will want to download the Debugger and install it Say Yes

WhoCrashed will create report but you have to scroll down to see it
Copy and paste it into your next reply

  • Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso VEW and save it to your Desktop:
  • Double-click VEW.exe
  • Under 'Select log to query', select (as appropriate):
    • Application
    • System

  • Under 'Select type to list', select (as appropriate):
    • Error
    • Information
    • Warning

Then use the 'Date of events' or 'Number of events' as follows:

Either:
  • Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
    Type 3 in the 1 to 20 box (or any number from 1 to 20)
    Then click the Run button.
    Notepad will open with the output log.


  • Click the radio button for 'Date of events'
    In the From: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) 25 04 2012
    In the To: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) 25 04 2012
    Then click the Run button.
    Notepad will open with the output log.

In case your computer does experience sudden reboots it is likely these are caused by malfunctioning hardware, power failure or a thermal issue. To troubleshoot a thermal issue, check the temperature using your BIOS setup program, check for dust in CPU and motherboard fans and if your computer is portable make sure it's located on a hard surface. Otherwise it's suggested you contact the support department of the manufacturer of your system or test your system with a memory test utility for further investigation.

Note that it's not always possible to state with certainty whether a reported driver is actually responsible for crashing your system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help you investigate this further.

OK it looks like the MATS service is causing the biggest majority of your issues so we're going to try something that is a little involved so please read these instructions carefully.

To manually start Windows XP with a clean boot, follow these steps:
Step 1: Start the System Configuration Utility

Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
The System Configuration Utility dialog box is displayed.

Step 2: Configure selective startup options

In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click the General tab, and then click Selective Startup.
Click to clear the Process SYSTEM.INI File check box.
Click to clear the Process WIN.INI File check box.
Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box. Verify that Load System Services and Use Original BOOT.INI are checked.
Click the Services tab.
Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
Click Disable All, and then click OK.
When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

Did it. It popped a "some tasks could not be performed box that disappeared to fast for me to write down all it said. Then I rebooted and shut off the ms config.

Yup, restarted. That is as far as I have went. Still running in Selective Start-up mode.
