Have tried other things on this site like ipconfig renew but nothing seems to work.
My ip numbers are all "0"'s
Any ideas?

thanks, not sure what computer as it is homemade but it is intel processor and I think 2.7 GHz. There are two yellow marks: 1 question mark under other devices-- multimedia audio controller and the second, an exclamation mark (!) in front of Microsoft system management bios driver. I uninstalled it thinking that if I rebooted it would be found and updated but it is now just gone!

Please find the file you requested attached below.
Thanks for the help. I have been up all night trying all kinds of things.
I am now able to get an internet connection but Internet Explorer, Version 5, will not connect.
This is progress as was able to do this before. Also, when I run a program called XPLite, a stripped down version of XP, I am able to get a connection and surf and download using a built in program called Opera.
Hope this helps.

Please use Belarc Advisor to get the Exact info on your machine make/model.
http://www.belarc.co...e_download.html

The only driver that I see you are missing is this one.
VIA Technologies VT8233/A AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller Which wont have anything to do with internet but we will get to that later.

You say you got internet to work.Boot into safemode with networking and download firefox(if you can).If you still can not connect in safe mode with networking then download Firefox on another computer and transfer it via cd or thumb drive.
http://www.mozilla.o...s/download.html

If you can not connect still after getting firefox on to the trouble machine then please do the following.

Please download MINITOOLBOX When the box opens click save file, save it to the desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following boxes:

List Last Ten Event Viewer Errors
List MiniDump Files
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.
List Devices (Only Problems)
Report IE Proxy Settings
Report FF Proxy Settings
List content of Hosts
List IP configuration
List Winsock Entries

Hit Go Post Results in your reply to me.

Please download and run it on the computer with the issue.
FarbarServiceScanner

Make sure the following options are checked:
Internet Services
Windows Firewall
System Restore
Security Center/Action Center
Windows Update

Press "Scan".
It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Please download the file in the link below and run it on the machine in question.
http://www.softpedia...IP-Repair.shtml

Go to the link below and ensure that your settings are the same.If you have to change anything then reboot your machine.

http://www.columbia....is/faq/254.html

Also open command prompt by hitting start at the lower left hand corner and type cmd. When the command prompt window opens type the below hitting enter after each.

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"
netsh int ip reset reset.log

Now type exit and reboot your machine.

If that doesnt work then download winsock xp and run it on the machine.

You said "Could not get Firefox to install. On my computer but won't unzip/run" Can you just copy the firefox setup file via cd/dvd and open it that way or are you telling me that your computer doesnt allow you to unzip anything?

Also here is a file association fix for .zip files.
http://www.dougknox..../file_assoc.htm

Can you tell me why windows update is not enabled? If you did not do this then download this file and save it to your desktop unzip it and right click and select merge. Here is a direct link to the file that you need.

Thanks for the excellent information. I have been up for a long time now and need to get some rest. I've started some of your latest recommendations but am starting to fade. I'll be back after a few hours of rest.
Thanks for monitoring this situation so closely. I want to resolve this today if possible so all of you help is appreciated.

O.K. back but with little progress. Got a copy of firefox from Hirens BootCD but it also could not connect to internet.
The Microsoft XP Service pack 1a would not continue to load because it could not get access to the internet.
Going to try the Winsock program soon...
Downloaded file from blackvipe site but didn't seem to have much difference. Did you want me to run it and then try to re-install XP service packs or Try to get Internet Explorer to get on the internet? Either way neither seemed to be accomplished. A strange questions but does it know where to "merge" on it's own - I didn't have to specify where to merge did I?

Any other ideas? What about my initial comment about my accidental erasure of the "Microsoft System Management Driver Bios"?
Thanks,
Patrick
If we are out of ideas is my only option to back up the drive as best I can and then begin with a clean install?
Thanks again for all your rapid, clear, directions...they are very much appreciated.

I am not sure what else can be done. Can you tell me why you tried the repair in the first place?Perhaps there is malware on your machine.I would post a new thread in the malware forum.
http://www.geekstogo...cleaning-guide/

Incluse a link to this thread so that the malware tech knows what he/she is dealing with.Sorry I could not be of service but I would hate to have
you doing pointless things on your computer because At this point I would only be guessing and wasting your time.Sorry again I honestly thought that I could solve your issue that is why I responded to your thread. Have a good night. :)

Wow, "sorry" should not be words found in you syntax. Thank you very much for all of your very thorough and easily followed directions. At this point I can not remember what the re-install was for but I do remember it were a number of things and a virus or suspected virus was probably one of them. I have been fighting buying a new computer for a while and this may be the turning point. Are there any areas I could go to which suggest the optimum set up for a combination ssd and hd system so that I put the operating system on the ssd and all other programs on the hd?

Also, KEEP HELPING!!! There is no more helpless feeling than sitting and waiting for help. Your help was extremely good and I very quick. I hope just want to make sure that you don't feel it was a waste of your time.

THANKS VERY MUCH, AGAIN. Not that I want to have to look for help again but if I do I'll look you up.
