Where to begin?............& can't believe I fell for this one!!!!!!!
Running a Dell Pavilion laptop with Windows 7 Home edition, & Norton 360.
Got a phone call from Indian gentleman advising he was from Microsoft Service Centre & was receiving messages advising my Service Licence has expired & I must of been experiencing some problems with PC speed, web search redirections, & general performance....which I was.
I was the asked to go to command bar on Start menu & type 'cmd', then in the 'dos' window type 'assoc'. He then read out the CLSID code that was there.....I guess this was where I first started to get sucked in! I started writing down everything I could as it unfolded, but it may not be 100% correct....
He then requested I type in 'eventvwr', then go online & access the site 'www.teamviewer.com'. From there I believe we then went to site 'ammyy.com' where I was asked to download a file which would allow the 'service centre' to shadow my PC & show me my problems.......I can here you all laughing now!!
I was then advise to pay the money to download the new 'service licence' & if I tried to reboot it would freeze my PC so I was given a one time only access code......I can reboot at any time but a small dialog box comes up each time in to which I have to put the code to be able to finish running up the PC. I disconnected the unit from the Web immediately so am now doing this post plus any surfing about spyware & keylogger infections on another PC...........
I see there <are any number of anti-spyware & anti-keylogger downloads available but I have been advised locally also to first wipe my hard drive & reload everything from scratch.....this I can understand but obviously I hope this clears the problem.
***At this point my Norton360 has not detected anything wrong..........but that depends I'm sure on what it is that it thinks it is looking for!
All inputs & replies are welcome as always!

Did you actually give them any money?

http://www.guardian....-scam-continues

I would uninstall the teamviewer software if you haven't already.

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.
Right click aswMBR.exe and Run as Administrator
uncheck trace disk IO calls
Click the "Scan" button to start scan (Accept the Avast Engine)
On completion of the scan if the Fix button is enabled (not the FixMBR button) press it and then run a new scan and click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply
If the Fix button is not enabled then just click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

ComboFix

:!: It must be saved to your desktop, do not run it from your browser:!:

:!: Disable your Antivirus software when downloading or running Combofix. If it has Script Blocking features, please disable these as well. See: http://www.bleepingc...opic114351.html

Download and Save this file -- to your Desktop -- from either of these two sources:
http://download.blee...Bs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Rightclick on ComboFix and select Run As Administrator to start the program.

* :!: Important: Have no other programs running. Your Task Bar should be clear of any program entries including your Browser.

* A window may open with a series of Disclaimers. Accept the Disclaimers to start the fix.

A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once. Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

A file will be created at => C:\Combofix.txt. I'll need to see that in your reply.

Download TDSSKiller:
http://support.kaspe.../tdsskiller.exe
Save it to your desktop then run it.
Double click on TDSSKiller.exe (Vista or Win 7 must right click and Run As Admin)
If TDSSKiller alerts you that the system needs to reboot, please consent.

Run TDSSKiller again but this time:
before you hit the Scan hit Change Parameters and check the two items under Additional Options. OK then Scan.
In this mode it is prone to false positives so do not change the SKIP option to DELETE unless it says TDSS.
When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents in your next reply.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
:!: If you have a previous version of MalwareBytes', remove it via Add or Remove Programs and download a fresh copy. :!:
http://www.malwareby...lwarebytes_free

SAVE Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
* The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
* Post that log back here.

Copy the text in the code box:

nnetsvcs
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
msconfig

safebootnetwork
activex
drivers32
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\*.exe

%systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
CREATERESTOREPOINT

Run OTL (Vista or Win 7 => right click and Run As Administrator)

Paste (Ctrl + v) the copied text in the box where it says Custom Scan/Fixes

Select the All option in the Extra Registry group then Run Scan.

You should get two logs. Please copy and paste both of them.

Right click on (My) Computer and select Manage (Continue) Then the Event Viewer. Next select Windows Logs. Right click on System and Clear Log, Clear. Repeat for Application.

Reboot.

Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator. Then type (with an Enter after each line).
sfc /scannow

(This will check your critical system files. If it asks for a CD and you don't have one or it doesn't like your CD just tell it to SKIP.)

1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
http://images.malwar...om/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Right-click VEW.exe and Run AS Administrator
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.

Thanks for your help Ron!.............Yes I have received confirmation that the money was collected (I sent it by Western Union).

At the moment I am using my wife's PC as I am reluctant to connect mine to the Internet again as it feels like they can 'see' me when I connect!......& that perhaps they can influence my PC remotely.

My plan was to reformat my hard drive then reload the operating system....that way hopefully getting rid of any 'extra' software that may be installed by these guys......does that sound reasonable?

That will probably work but it's usually not necessary. If you do reload it make sure you get all your windows updates via the control panel before you try and do anything else.

OK, understood & thanks.

So - to be sure I understand- if I have to go online to download the first 'aswMBR' software, then I am assuming that the subsequent actions with that software & the following others will remove my visibility?

Another question please: As my IP address is now 'known' I guess I should now avoid setting up any online banking on my PC, or indeed any other online purchases? Example: Amazon.com, iTunes, etc.....

Any recommendations/advice on anti-spyware?.....I see there is quite a comprehensive section on this (the 'Malware & Spyware Cleaning Guide' at the top of the page). I guess I will start there........?

Once we clean it, it won't matter if you they "know" your IP address.

Just uninstall teamviewer software then go on line and follow my instructions. I will tell you when the PC is clean.

I already went through the programs list, looked in the Control Panel section for uninstalling software, & also searched the hard drive but cannot find anything called teamviewer or team or even viewer............perhaps it was a one-off download which was cancelled when I rebooted. I did find it as a small '.exe' file under the Downloads folder after my first reboot & I deleted it along with the small software I got from the site AMMYY.com which I was redirected to after downloading the Teamviewer software.

Anyway, I will start the cleanup & let you know what happens.......Thanks again!

OK, so what I have so far is as follows:

I ran Avast & the scan, & the log file is attached (aswMBR.txt)Attached File  aswMBR.txt   1.75KB   106 downloads

I downloaded & ran ComboFix, the log file is attached (Combofix.txt).Attached File  ComboFix.txt   14.73KB   131 downloads

I downloaded & ran TDSSKiller. Five threats were detected but TDSS files were detected (screen capture attached, 'TDSSKILLER THREATS1.jpg'TDSSKILLER THREATS1.jpg ), log file "TDSSKiller.txt" is attached Attached File  TDSSKiller.2.7.30.0_20.04.2012_12.16.57_log.txt   131.51KB   112 downloads. After running this the software recommended a reboot, which I did however the hacker's dialog box asking for the 'Startup Password' still came up....I typed in the code they gave me & continued to run up the PC.

I next downloaded & ran the free trial version of 'Malwarebytes'. Ran the Quick scan, some threats were detected (screen capture attached, 'MALWARE THREATS DETECTED.jpg'MALWARE THREATS DETECTED.jpg ). Log file is attached (mbam-log-2012-04-20 (15-14-05).txt Attached File  mbam-log-2012-04-20 (15-14-05).txt   3.24KB   100 downloads).
After this I rebooted, got the hacker's dialog box again, ran Malwarebytes again in Quick scan & nothing was detected. I then decided to run the Full Scan which detected no threats...the log file I now cannot find!

Next step was to run OTL but I am not sure what this is?......sorry!

Also when I do get to the two logs, where do I copy and paste them to?.............

Most people start with OTL so I usually don't bother posting the link. Based on what I see in aswMBR I want to change it a bit anyway so disregard the last OTL instructions and do this:

Download OTL from
http://www.geekstogo...timers-list-it/
and Save it to your desktop.

Copy the text in the code box:

DRIVES
nnetsvcs
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
msconfig
safebootminimal
safebootnetwork
activex
drivers32
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\*.exe
%APPDATA%\*.
/md5start
samlibo.dll
atapi.sys
explorer.exe
winlogon.exe
Userinit.exe
svchost.exe
csrss.exe
PrintIsolationHost.exe
consrv.dll
/md5stop
%systemroot%\*. /mp /s
hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /rs
hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /64 /rs
%systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
CREATERESTOREPOINT

Run OTL (Vista or Win 7 => right click and Run As Administrator)

Paste (Ctrl + v) the copied text in the box where it says Custom Scan/Fixes

Select the All option in the Extra Registry group then Run Scan.

You should get two logs. Please open them in notepad then copy and paste each into your next Reply. (Don't attach them)

Yes go ahead and attach it.

See if you can uninstall:

iLivid
Windows iLivid Toolbar

When exactly does this window where you have to type something come up? What exactly does it say? IF you just hit Enter instead of typing in the magic number what happens?

Copy the next line:

reg export "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" "%userprofile%\Desktop\winlogon.txt"

Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator, Continue. Right click and the copied line should appear. Hit Enter. Close Command Window. On your desktop should be a file winlogon.txt. Attach it to your next reply.

Run OTL, Quickscan again and post the log.

OK, .....

Uninstalled iLivid, no problems there.

Regards the dialogue box, see attached photo I took ('Startup Password Box'). I need to enter code 'kol' to get past it.....hitting Enter only has no effect.

STARTUP PASSWORD BOX.jpg

Attached is the Winlogon text file...........

Attached File  winlogon.txt   25.01KB   181 downloads

The results of the better search for Teamviewer came up with the hits shown in the screen capture 'Teamviwer1.jpg'.
TEAMVIEWER1.jpg

I also got the attached logfile 'T_Viewer7_Logfile'.

Attached File  T_Viewer7_Logfile.log   108.14KB   256 downloads

I also remembered to check my Downloads page & found the attached info on the Teamviewer Setup file, & the other 'shadowing' software I mentioned, 'AA-v3.exe' (see attached screen capture, 'FILES IN DOWNLOADS').

OK. I see what they have done. They have just turned on a Windows Feature called syskey.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310105

If you do:

Start, Run, syskey, OK Then Update then password startup then "store
startup key locally" OK.

It shouldn't ask for the password next time.

You TeamViewer Software is hidden at:

C:\Users\doug\AppData\Local\Temp\TeamViewer

We can remove it and iLivid which appears to still be there with OTL:

Copy the text in the code box by highlighting and Ctrl + c

:OTL
O4 - HKLM..\Run: [DATAMNGR] C:\Program Files\Windows iLivid Toolbar\Datamngr\datamngrUI.exe (Discordia, LTD)
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: (C:\PROGRA~1\WI3C8A~1\Datamngr\datamngr.dll) - C:\Program Files\Windows iLivid Toolbar\Datamngr\datamngr.dll (Discordia, LTD)
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: (C:\PROGRA~1\WI3C8A~1\Datamngr\IEBHO.dll) - C:\Program Files\Windows iLivid Toolbar\Datamngr\IEBHO.dll (Discordia, LTD)

:files
C:\Users\doug\AppData\Local\Temp\TeamViewer

:Commands
[EMPTYJAVA]
[EMPTYFLASH]
[RESETHOSTS]
[purity]
[Reboot]

then run OTL and Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste (ctrl +v) the text. Verify that you got it all and Then click the Run Fix button at the top
Let the program run unhindered, OTL will reboot the PC when it is done. Save the log and copy and paste it to a reply.

[Reboot]

then run OTL by right clicking and Run As Admin. Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste (ctrl +v) the text. Verify that you got it all and Then click the RUN FIX button (NOT THE QUICK SCAN button!) at the top
Let the program run unhindered, OTL will reboot the PC when it is done.

This last run will also crate a file called winsock2.reg on your desktop. It's an insurance file in case the next step goes wrong and you can't get on the Internet. Just right click on it and Merge then reboot and it should work OK.

Copy the next line:

netsh winsock reset catalog

Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator, Continue. Right click and Paste or Edit then Paste and the copied line should appear. Hit Enter.

Reboot.

If you can get on the Internet you can delete the winsock2.reg file.

Run OTL (Vista or Win 7 => right click and Run As Administrator)

Select the All option in the Extra Registry group then Run Scan.

You should get two logs. Please copy and paste both of them.
