Hi again Aqua258,

Are you up for trying the clean boot analysis before you do a clean install?
I understand if you don't want to take the time to do the clean boot analysis.

In preperation for a clean install, do you have your important files backed up to an external drive, or DVD's?
You should take your time and verify that everything you care about is copied off of the computer.

Does your computer have a recovery disk, or does it have a recovery partition?
If you are not sure, you can give me the make and model number, and I can find you all the details.
If neither, do you have a Windows disk?

Do you have your Windows product key? Usually a sticker on the side or back of your desktop, usually on the bottom of a laptop.

Hey Crowbar...

Got majorly peeved yesterday with the laptop so it was either throw it out the window or do a clean install. :killcomp:
Lucky for it i opted for the second choice.
I have a disc as well as product key.

I Backed everything, changed bios to boot from cd/dvd and let it do its thing.
When the new install was done i changed the bios back to boot normally.

I loaded Avast, Ccleaner, Malwarebytes and Uniblue drive scanner...Nothing more.
Most windows updates have been loaded. Checked drivers and had 4 out of date, sorted those.

All was going well, then the devil possessed me to install Chrome.
It seriously doesn't like my laptop or my settings are out.
I get the drop out/freeze no talking to modem thing....[bleep]
When i go into FB/games lots of shockwave crashes or unknown crashes...
If i turn them off i get the snap crackle pop black screen with jigsaw piece.

I'm going to call my ISP now and have another word with them just to be sure about modem settings.
Lord knows we have done everything humanly possible to check for virus's etc.

I'll get back to you as soon as i have more info if any.....

PS; maybe all the freezes have nothing to do with our computers but an internal war with browsers trying to cram lots of unwanted stuff in them that conflict with pute settings  OR internal war between FB and Zynga games?

Hi Aqua258,
I am glad to hear that your computer didn't get a flying lesson

I would stay away from the registry part of Ccleaner, it can cause problems by blindly changing or removing registry keys. I would also stay far away from the uniblue driver scanner. My rule for drivers is, if it ain't broke - don't fix it. I thought you had a driver issue to begin with, and now you changed drivers and your problem is back.
How about rolling back the 4 drivers you updated and try Chrome again? Do you remember which 4 drivers you changed with the uniblue program?
Roll back drivers by going to Device Manager, find the driver you want to change, right click on it and select properties.
Go to the drivers tab and you will see the Roll Back Driver option.
Let me know if that helps.

Hey there,

Well i spoke to my ISP peeps and all looks good from their end.
He did suggest possible old wireing in the house(phone line)only cos thats all he could think of.

What is the best way to keep registry clean?
How does one know if a driver is out of date AND how would i change it manually?

I will check to see if uniblue shows what drivers it changed, see if i can do a roll back.
Will get back to you on that.

:P

Update;
These are the drivers it changed.
To restore/rollback them do i need to do a system restore?

drivers.jpg

Update 2(next morn);
As soon as i turned chrome on got the freeze then this, not sure if it means anything.
Attached File  Nonrespond.txt   1.02KB   136 downloads
This came up in the pop-up box of End Program not responding OR wait.

Hi again,
Let me try to answer your questions:

What is the best way to keep registry clean?

You actually don't need to "clean" your registry. Registry "cleaning" is mostly marketing ploys by companies like Uniblue. I know Ccleaner has a registry cleaning feature, and I would urge you not to use that part. The rest of the program is perfectly fine. Please read this article and this one also for some honest information on the use of these products.
I do recommend making a backup of your registry occasionally, and can give you info on a great tool that backs up your registry, and we use it here at Geeks to Go often, if you are interested.

How does one know if a driver is out of date AND how would i change it manually?

This kind of depends on what you use your computer for. I know that people that play all the latest games constantly search for the newest video and audio drivers to squeeze more performance out of their machines, but for someone like me that is not a gamer, I only update my drivers if there is a specific problem that I want to address. If I am not having a problem, I don't mess with them. If I were to need a driver update, the first place I look is the computers manufacturer's site (dell, HP, toshiba...) Many times hardware is from a 3rd party vendor, but just different enough to have to go back to the manufacturer of the system for specialized drivers.

To restore/rollback them do i need to do a system restore?

While I think that would work, I think it would be much easier on you to do it thru the Device Manager, I will give you better instructions for that, and I am focusing on your network card drivers, as you are having issues with your internet connection:
Click on the Windows and type "device manager" into the search box (without the quotes)
Double click Network adapters
You should see a listing for your Atheros AR500 7EG - this is the one I am interested in.
Right click that listing and click on Properties
In the properties window, select the Driver tab
The Roll Back Driver button should be available, please click on it and follow any instructions offered by Windows, you will probably have to confirm that you really want to roll back to the previous driver, you can answer Yes to the prompt.

Reboot your computer and try Chrome again, let me know if that helps.

Hey Crowbar,

OK, did the rollback yesterday but left it to today to run Chrome in diff places.

I think we have made some progress.

What i'm getting now is the "sand/Timer" next to my cursor when i try and load pages, Plus when i look at the 2 they are not clear.
They look like the the outlining is broken. E.g. not clear like this text.(If that makes sense)

PS; I have deleted Uniblue.
I wont clean registry any more.

Q; for your second answer; I use the laptop for my websites as well as playing games on FB, nothing more. It's home based, no network.

UPDATE; just tried taking a pic of the cursor plus timer but it doesnt seem to show in pics.

Hi again Aqua258,

I would like to take a good look at your Chrome settings, and I can do that with OTL.

Step 1
Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time and post them in your topic

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • OTL log
  • Extras.txt

Update; More updates have been coming through since the last time i wrote.
Yesterday morning i go to play a game, tried to get out of game to go back to FB home page and the screen goes black.
Only cursor and sandtimer showing. Waited a while nothing was happening so i turned everything(shut down) off and waited a while.
When i restarted it didnt load windows straight up but asked(black screen plus writing)how i wanted to load.
I hit the norm button and everything came back up, only this time with the User Control option, and the battery icon(bottom right)now has a red cross through it. Says fully charged but consider replacement.

Here are the logs;

Hi again Aqua258,
It sounds like you saw the Advanced Boot Options menu, so choosing normal was good.
For your battery, I recently got that message myself, and it was right. That message appears when your battery gets worn down, and can only hold %40 of a full charge. You do have the option of turning that notification off, but it is very likely that your battery will need to be replaced sometime soon.

Step 1
Let's roll back the other 3 drivers and see if that makes a difference.
In your Device Manager ,use the same procedure to roll back these drivers:
Realtek PCIe FE family - should be under network adapters - this one is my main focus at the moment.
USB Mass Storage Device - I think this one would be in Universal Serial Bus controllers, but you may have to look around for it.
High Definition Audio - look under Sound, video and game controllers for this one.

Step 2
Download Security Check from here or here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • post the contents of checkup.txt
  • how is chrome doing after rolling back drivers?

Hey,

First and third drivers "NO option to rollback".
The word is there but its a light grey so i guess that means the original is there and can not be rolled back further.
Driver two USB mass storage device; I opened all drivers, even the hidden ones and can not find that anywhere in the list.
Would it have a diff name?

My comp is running worse than ever, i seriously think i need to update drivers.
Both Chrome and IE9 are loading up so slow. The graphics/outline of pics not clear/look broken, i can almost see the dots that made them.
Now in my games my mouse/pointer doesnt join with the one in games. So at times it looks like i have 2...lol

Scan results added in a min; BRB

Well so much for be right back...Hour and a half later...I was half way through d/loading security check and my internet killed out. I just managed to get it back up. Here is the scan;

Hi Aqua258,
Since you say your cursor is looking so strange, let's look at your display settings.
Can you please tell me the model of your Toshiba? I can look up the exact drivers for your model, directly from Toshiba
Can you also tell me about how you did the fresh install of Windows? Is it a restore disk that came with the laptop?

I would like you to export some display settings for me,
Click on the Start Orb,
type in the box System Information and press Enter.
In the System Information window, click on the plus sign next to Components
Click on Dislpay and you will see a bunch of information on the right side.
Please click File then Export, type in Display.txt and save it to your desktop.
Now post the contents of Display.txt into your next response.

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • Model number of your computer
  • How you did the fresh install
  • contents of Display.txt

Toshiba Satellite L300; Model PSLB8A 047004

The disc is original.
My friend got it when she bought her computer but she preferred to stay with XP, so she gave me the disc because my laptop came with Vista and i didnt like it.

I just noticed a few new things in control panel that i didnt see before.
What are these?
Cisco EAP Fast Module
Cisco Leap Module
Cisco Peap Module

Hello Aqua258,
Those Cisco files seem to be support for your wirless adapter. Do you connect to a Cisco router somewhere?

The way you installed Windows tells me a lot about the problem at hand. You need to download the Windows 7 drivers for your model.
Visit this page and download then install ALL of the DRIVERS, EXCEPT for the
  • Atheros Wireless LAN Driver 8.0.0.225.0.s3264_wCAT
as I believe you have the other LAN driver, the Realtek Wireless LAN Driver The notes say to remove the old driver before installing the new one. Make sure you have downloaded the new driver before you uninstall the old one, as you won't be able to connect to the internet wirelessly after you uninstall that driver. You can install the utilities and applications if you want them. You will have to get these drivers:
  • Chicony Camera Assistant Software
  • Conexant Modem Driver
  • Conexant Modem Driver On Hold
  • Synaptics Touch Pad Driver
from this location
These are Vista drivers, so make sure you only install those 4 from that list link.

NO connecting to any Cisco anything...Thats why they stuck out, I have never seen that in CP before.

******************************************************

Ok, starting from the bottom 4...

Chicony Camera Assistant Software.....<OK, done
Conexant Modem Driver.................<Toshiba Modem Driver....are these the same thing?
Conexant Modem Driver On Hold.........<Couldn't see this one
Synaptics Touch Pad Driver............<OK,done

*********************************************************

The drivers on this page(windows 7)...How old are they?
The reason i ask is that one of them came up with a pop-up saying i had a newer version already installed?
The first on the list(Value package) said "Jim was dead", rebooted my comp.
One of them didnt work(configfree) but i don't think he's that important.
How do I now check to see if these are all installed?(I clicked run on all drivers after d/load)
AND... if they are the latest?<<<<<<<Important.
I rebooted when i was done.

PS;I can still see the dots that make up my cursor.
I'll run with this for some hours and get back to you if i see any changes.

***********************************************************

These are the Drivers i installed from Windows7 link;
drivers.jpg

AM I MISSING ANY?

Hi Aqua258,
Don't worry about configfree, I agree, it's probably not necessary.
Yes I believe that the Toshiba Software Modem driver is the connexant driver so go ahead and install that one.

It does seem like you successfully downloaded the driver that made Chrome say He's Dead Jim, and you say you ran all of the installers. This is the filename - 022243_02.01.49.TC00214700H.exe - have you ran that one? Otherwise I think you got all of them.
I believe that the drivers offered on that Toshiba page are the recommended and newest drivers for your model.

Unlike security programs, drivers do not always need to be brought up to the latest versions, unless there is a specific problem, but they should always be the drivers supplied by the computer manufacturer, for your specific model.

Can you check your screen resolution for me? Right-click on a part of your desktop that does not have an icon, and click on Screen Resolution, then click on Resolution. Is that slider all the way up at the top? If not, please move it to the top. Does that make your cursor look better?
