If we decide to cut back on something to save cash, I think the video card and the CPU would be the best place to cut for what the computer is needed for, do you think?

I would stick with the ASUS card that I suggested (unless we can find a better one for less cash) but swap the i7 CPU for the top i5 CPU http://www.newegg.ca...N82E16819116504 saves you $65 or the 2500k which will save you $75 http://www.newegg.ca...N82E16819115072 we may even better these prices if we shop around more

Would http://www.newegg.ca...k=PGD38G1600ELK be a good alternative to the Corsair? It's on the list.

I can`t find anything less expensive so I would say yes go for the Patriot, it is a good brand in any event
