Hi Again,

Used AVG and found two trojan horses, but smitfraud.c is still hijacking my display properties. I've been working on it, but still no luck in defeating it. I'm posting the latest HJT log created today, I know everyone is busy helping other members and I'm patient so whenever someone has time to help me with the log I appreciate it. Thanks again for the help Geeks.

Welcome to Geeks to Go!

I would be happy to help you out. My first recommendation is to uninstall AVG. You already have Panda 2005 and multiple anti-virus programs slow your computer down and do not play well together at all. More than one anti-virus program does not make your computer better protected - quite the opposite actually.

Please go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove programs and remove:

AVG

I will be back as soon as possible to help you clean your system!

You're welcome! :tazz:

First, we need to disable TeaTimer, temporarily. Otherwise, it could interfere with cleaning your system.
* Open Spybot.
* Click MODE, then check ADVANCED MODE, click YES
* Click TOOLS > RESIDENT.
* Uncheck Teatimer.
* Click ALLOW CHANGE.
* We will enable Teatimer after your system is clean

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Please RIGHT-CLICK: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Grinler's reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT*CLICK THIS LINK TO LEARN HOW TO VIEW HIDDEN FILES

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit. *In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.

* Save it to your desktop.

* Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\bsw.exe
C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\Windows\system\hhk.dll
C:\Windows\System\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\system\perfcii.ini
C:\Windows\System\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System\shnlog.exe
C:\Windows\System\intmon.exe
C:\Windows\System\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\system\msole32.exe
C:\Windows\System\ole32vbs.exe

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following, if found, (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System\LogFiles
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

Reboot into normal mode.

1.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

2.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan.

Hi Bananafanafo,

I hope all is well with you. Here's where we are so far...

Desktop is recovered, Cleaner opened 820 MBs, unable to use IE to conduct active scan, it opens but hangs-the explorer window is blank but the favorites are listed. The about blank bug still has has it non-functional.

I'm posting the latest HJT (6/7/05) bellow. I want to thank you for your help thus far...about blank is one of the first items listed in the HJT log. I look forward to your next post.

You have to disable Teatimer otherwise it will not allow us to clean your system (it will keep about:blank there...)

To disable TeaTimer, temporarily.
* Open Spybot.
* Click MODE, then check ADVANCED MODE, click YES
* Click TOOLS > RESIDENT.
* Uncheck Teatimer.
* Click ALLOW CHANGE.
* We will enable Teatimer after your system is clean

Please download the programs listed below, but do not run them yet:

1) About:Buster by RubberyDuckY:
*Download it and extract it to C:/aboutbuster.
*Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
*Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
*Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
*If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
*You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
2) CWShredder - Download it and save it to your desktop.
3) Ad-Aware - Download, install, and update After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run a scan. Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continuously tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Run CWShredder
-Next, click on the: ‘Fix’ button
-Follow the prompts, and press OK

Run AboutBuster and save the logs
*Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
*Click "OK" at the directions Read: Important! prompt.
*Click "Start" and then "OK" to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
*Click "Yes" at the About:Buster prompt to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
*Please wait while AboutBuster scans your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
*When it has finished, click "Save Log...". Make sure you save it as I will need a copy of it.
Click "Exit" and "Exit" again to exit AboutBuster.

Run CleanUp!
-Make sure it is on Standard Mode
-Click the "CleanUp!" button

Run Ad-Aware
Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
In the Ad-Aware main window, click on the gear icon at the top of the screen to open the preferences window. In the "General" window, make sure the following options are selected:
1) Automatically save log-file
2) Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
3) Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Click the "Scanning" button on the left-hand side and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Scan within archives
2) Scan active processes
3) Scan registry
4) Deep scan registry
4) Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLs
5) Scan my Hosts file

Please also click on "Select drives & folders to scan" and select your hard drive(s). Then click the "Advanced" button on the left-hand side and make sure all the options under "Log-file Detail Level" are selected. Next, click the "Tweak" button on the left-hand side. Click on "Scanning Engine" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Unload recognized processes & modules during scanning
2) Obtain command line of scanned processes
3) Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Click on "Cleaning Engine" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Always try to unload modules before deletion
2) During removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary
3) Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
4) Delete quarantined objects after restoring

Finally, click on "Safety Settings" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Automatically select problematic objects in results lists
2) Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)

Click on "Proceed" to save the preferences. Then please click the "Start" button on the bottom left side to begin a scan. Select "Use custom scanning options" and then click "Next". Ad-Aware will then scan for malware. When it is finished, make sure any objects listed in RED are selected and click "Next" to remove the objects.

While still in Safe Mode, Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:

Okay, no problem...sorry about the tea timer, I though it was okay to activate it again after the first cleaning process. I'll get on this right away. Thank you again. :tazz:

Hey Bananafanafo,

I attempted to install Ad-AwareSE and as I'm attempting to update I get the following error pop-ups...

The ADAWARE.EXE file is linked to missing export WININET.DLL:FindnextUrlCacheEntryExA:

then...

C:\PROGRA~1\LAVASOFT\AD-AWA~1\AD-AWARE.EXE A device attached to the system is not functioning.

then lastly...

ERROR Could not execute the external program

I only get this as I'm about to update it. What do you think?

I think you should skip running Ad-Aware :tazz:

Please continue with the rest.

It's probably just the new version of Ad-Aware not playing well with your system. If we need to, I'll have you download an older version later :tazz:

Okay,

There were a few problems in completing everything you asked to the letter but I think for the most part, I was able to get much of it accomplished.

1) You already know about the ad-aware issue (errors in executing the program)

2) I disabled teatimer, rebooted in Safe Mode and ran CW Shredder and CW Search was not found...it never finds it, however I ran spybot and it found 1 entry-this was after I ran CW Shredder. I don't understand why that happens.

3) While still in Safe Mode I ran AboutBuster and I didn't see anyplace to click "Ok" or the "Important" prompt you mentioned that I should read. also, the program did not scan for alternate "Streams" I'm not sure if it's becuase my system is FAT32 as opposed to NTSF but that reason is listed in the About Buster log I'll post bellow. The program did not ask me for a second pass at all. Here is the log from that program:

AboutBuster 5.0 reference file 28
Scan started on [04/07/2003] at [9:40:56 PM]
------------------------------------------------
Streams(ADS) not scanned: System not NTFS
------------------------------------------------
No Files Found!
------------------------------------------------
Scan was COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY at 9:40:57 PM

AboutBuster 5.0 reference file 28
Scan started on [06/08/2005] at [10:51:20 AM]
------------------------------------------------
Streams(ADS) not scanned: System not NTFS
------------------------------------------------
No Files Found!
------------------------------------------------
Scan was COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY at 10:51:21 AM

4) I ran Cleanup and opened 79.9MBs.

5) Again, no luck with Ad-Aware so I skipped those instructions.

6) Ran HJT and found a few of the files you listed and checked the boxes to remove them. However, after I ran the first pass, I checked again and found a few of the same files, so I removed them again. It actually took several passes to get them (and this is with Teatimer unchecked) I've posted the log below.

Lastly, I created the Unreg.bat file and opened it, (while in safe mode as you requested) and the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mserrtrc.dll was found but there was NO way to delete it that I saw. So that file is still active because it hasn't been removed.

So I've rebooted again and now...the HJT log you requested.

Thanks again Banana we'll keep working on it.

No need to worry about CWShredder or AboutBuster (it was actually a new version and I used the speech from the old verison, nothing to worry about!)

What do you mean the IE browser isn't working?

We'll kill those files with killbox, then take another look at a new HiJackThis log.

* Run Killbox.exe.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them then press CTRL + C

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mserrtrc.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\echostr2.exe
C:\WINDOWS\echostr2.exe

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "OK" at the PendingRenameOperations prompt. If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

After your computer reboots, post a new HiJackThis log.
