Is your network adapter from Intel or Broadcom? Can't tell from the dc5750. What we want to do is download the driver for the network adapter from HP.

Broadcom:
http://h20000.www2.h...Item=ir-99882-1

Intel:
http://h20000.www2.h...Item=ir-66362-1

Then try and install it.

...still takes ages to start after a reboot.

No conectivity.

Seems to take around five minutes before the system finishes loading before anything works, and that always conincides with it 'Finding New Hardware' - the 'SM Bus Controller' that has the yellow exclamation mark over it and a yellow question mark.

The first one should do it:
Intel® Chipset Device Software (INF Update Utility)

Primarily for Intel® 6, 5, 4, 3, 900 Series Chipset,
installs the Windows* INF files.
See detailed description to make sure you need this file.

Try this one:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=3252512&prodNameId=3253417&swEnvOID=1098&swLang=13&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=vc-46123-1

There are two others on this page:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3253417&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=3252512&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1098#11394
under Chipset. You can try them too.

First one loaded and seemed to do something but nothings changed. Went to device manager and there is now a second item under Ntwork Adaptors. It's called 'WAN Miniport (IP) #2', and it has a yellow exclamation mark over it. It says the device status isn't working because Windows cannot load the drivers required for the device (Code 31).

Do you think we're getting anywhere here? I really appreciate all your help, but what are my options if I just cut my losses and want to reset my computer? I don't have the installation discs so I realise I'd have to buy a new copy from somewhere, or is there an alternative? I have already backed up everything I want to keep on a seperate hard drive so I have no reason to keep the original set up if its easier to go back to square one?

Reloading is always an option. You used to be able to get a disk from HP tho I think they charged you $5 or so for it and you have to wait for it to come. Don't know if they still do that.

Go back into Device Manager and select View, Show Hidden Devices. You should see 5 WanMiniPort emtries. These normally won't let you uninstall them but you can try. Also look in the properties, Driver, Driver Details of the one that won't start and see what drivers it uses.

Look in your SM Bus entry too and see if there is anything under Details, Device Instance ID that might tell us what driver it wants.

The Device Instance Id for the SM Bus Controller reads...
PCI\VEN1002&DEV_4385&SUBSYS_280A103C&REV_13\3&B1BFB68&0&A0

There appear to be 6 WAN Miniports:
- WAN Miniport (IP)
- WAN Miniport (IP) - Packet Scheduler Miniport
- WAN Miniport (IP) #2 This is the one with the yellow exclamation
- WAN Miniport (L2TP)
- WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
- WAN Miniport (PPTP)

The other five seem to be ok.

Did you want me to uninstall all six and then reboot? Not done anything yet.

The SM Bus says it ATI which is usually your graphics adapter so try the

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=3252512&prodNameId=3253417&swEnvOID=1098&swLang=13&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=PSG_I23818-109080

You can right click on any of the Network Adapters and try to uninstall them tho I doubt they will. You can also uninstall the sm bus too.
