I won't have access to that laptop until tonight. I will be able to see your comments though on my iPhone.

Just wanted to mention something else. Once my laptop computer was already going nuts, in my desperation, I was trying everything. I found this article: http://www.revthatup...e/#comment-3602 and replaced rundll32 with his file.

Maybe this made things even worse?

And after the C:\ did you try Ctrl+M???

Thanks,CompCav. Just got home. Yes, I did press CTRL+M. Neither step worked. I just tried step 1 again and - same result. Plus when I restart, before the scan starts and aborts - it goes to HP screen and I need to press esc. I'll try step 2 again now. BTW, did you notice that my prompt was different? As I said I couldn't delete it by prtessing delete or backspace. The HP screen offered F2 as a choice, so now that I can use CTRL+M, I chose Hard Disk Self Test. Is that OK? It says the following:

(Press ESC to Cancel)...
10% Complete <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
(Quick) Passed

I don't have a USB keybord. I do have a wireless keyboard, but that would need to be installed and I can try to do that, but my Bluetooth is missing a driver now, it says. The test is now showing 20% complete.

Thanks, CompCav! :lol: Also, I forgot your basic rule - not to do anything without your say so. :headscratch: Sorry about that. Hope running this Primary Hard Disk Self Test is OK with you... I think it might take a while, it's at 30% now. BTW, at the very top of this page it says:

PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility
Diagnostics

Edit: in about 20 minutes, it went from 30% to 50% Complete. I'll report when it's over. (Writing this on a different laptop)

The self test is not very useful because it cannot fix files or repair sectors. We really need to run check disk.

So please let me know the operating system of the other laptop you are using so that I can prepare a fix that will use it to burn a CD to boot the infected PC with.

OK the test shows the hardware is good we just need to run check disk and sfc /scannow as well as a few other tools that will need a working enter key. Probably one of your friends would have an old USB wired keyboard just laying around that they do not use anymore or even let you borrow one off of a computer that is working for a day or two.

Let me know when you get it and we will need to do steps 1 and 2 listed in post #17.

Before your last response, I just tried steps 1 and 2 again. As I was going to choose Command prompt, I noticed a window hiding under that window. I clicked and:there is a window titled Startup Repair.

The window is shaking/blinking very fast, so I can't read most of what it says. What I CAN make out, and these are disjointed bits and pieces, not full sentences:
