I need the help of a professional.
Like so many other people I have somehow contracted a browser hijacker. The hijacker has only affected IE and MSN Explorer so far. IE is infected the worst with browser changes, many pop-up ads, slower performance, and freeze-ups at times. My whole computers system is running slower too. I am currently doing all my work through FireFox.

Heres a quick take on the problem. About a month ago I had seeve.exe. I was able to get rid of it by taking it off the start-up menu in the System Configuration Utility, and then manually deleting it from my C drive.
I was using Zone Alarm Pro for about a month free of charge after that. Everything was fine.
Last Sunday (May 29, 2005) my Zone Alarm Pro trial expired. ZA switched from the Pro version to the free version. What I didn't know was that ZL free vers. had somehow shut down my WindowsXP Firewall. My Firewall was down for a half hour and in that time I got slammed with this Browser HiJacker.
In the past week I have ran Norton, SpySweeper, Microsoft AntiSpyware, Spybot, AVG, SpySubtract, Ad-Aware all to no avail. Norton picked up nothing on the first run but picked up WxBug.exe on the second but didn't remove it so I removed it manually and also deleted AIM totally. (I didnt use it much anyway.)
All the removal programs are saying that I have a browser hijacker that affects IE. SpySweeper has such huge conflicts with this hijacker that it shut down some of its features. My computer froze constantly when it would run so I removed SpySweeper. Microsoft AntiVirus detects the hijacker, then says it has removed it, but it didn't. None of the programs are able to remove this monster. SpySubract constantly pops up a warning that my IE broswer is being changed. The location of this hijacker is shown as my IE address/search bar. There is always a new code such as "http:www.37y23r7gbefbftg9bbrUP.html" shown. This URL code changes constantly.
I've done a lot more than this to try to remove this culprit but these are the main points.
Here's my Hijack This log file. Please help. I'm an online college student and I'm worried about losing the use of my computer.
Thank You.

P.S. I have had SP2 for many months prior to this problem and I keep all security updates current on my computer.

I went through all the suggested steps and scans prior to posting this message to you. I used Ewido Security Guard and will post its findings. After I restarted my computer Ewido informed me of two alarms that started when my computer did. Both had the word lop in them. Thinking that deleting the Ewido Quarantine archive would finally rid my computer of this mess, I deleted the archive. This did not eliminate my hacker problem. This scan report shows 1 item in quarantine but there were actually 3 after I restarted my computer. The extra 2 were added after I restarted.
Here is my Scan report from Ewido:

Hi Snowfluff,

You have a long list of infections on your PC. It may take a few runs but we will take care of them all. :tazz:

Please print these instructions or copy them into a text file on your desktop for easy accessibility.

Please disable SpySweeper while doing this fix as it may interfere with the fix. Also make sure that you are not connected to the internet while doing the fix. Disconnect the PC from the Modem. You can restart Spysweeper and reconnect the PC to the modem when you reach Step 7.

1. Download Programs

Download these programs and save them in a new folder on your Desktop.

I really appreciate the help that you're giving me. I've been so afraid that I would lose important data or the use of my computer.

I had to shut down Ewido before I could run Lop Uninstaller because Ewido gave me a warning that said Lop Uninstaller was malware.

I also had to ignore warnings from Norton Anti-virus that Silent Runner.vbs was malicious code.

Is this normal?

Hi Snowfluff,

Be assured that we will be very careful while suggesting and recommending any steps. Most of the steps we tell u and others have been tried and tested. Specifically in ur case, it is a well documented infection and the removal is easy. We are almost through with cleaning up your PC.

So you plunge ahead with the fixes without any fears.

I neeed to know if you are using a special / off brand keyboard?? Maybe with the name of Dolphin ??

Please print these instructions or copy them into a text file on your Desktop.

1. Click on Start ---> Settings ---> Control Panel. Double click on Scheduled Tasks.

There would be an item listed as - B139F2C7931A6FB7. A possible alternate name is Wmahopethat.exe. Delete this item.

2. Open Windows Explorer (right click on Start and then click on explore). Locate and delete the following folders -

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\play acid first deaf
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\one sect junk store

Post a fresh HJT log and let me know about your keyboard.

I can't begin to tell you how grateful that I am to you and all of the people here at Geeks to Go!!! :help: I am currently a disabled second year Web Design student on a fixed income and I would never have been able to pay for these repairs. You're so knowledgable and skillful and you took care of my problem so fast.
I ran Microsoft AntiSpyware after I did the first steps that you told me to do and it still showed a possible browser hijacker located in the IE search bar. The main browser that I use was working fine again after i deleted and fixed the files you showed me. Shortly after the first scan by Microsoft AntiSpyware, that program ran a scheduled second one and for the first time in a week there were no infected files found on my computer and I have you to thank!

To answer this question that you asked me: "I need to know if you are using a special / off brand keyboard?? Maybe with the name of Dolphin ??" . . . My answer is that I am using a Dell QuietKey Keyboard that a friend of mine added to my custom built computer that he built for me. I also saw that infection warning under keyboard driver filters on the silent runners logfile and I wondered what it was about. My keyboard is definitely a Dell.

I currently have SpyBot S&D, Ewido, Hijack This, Norton System Works 2005, SpySubtract, Ad-aware, Enough is Enough, Clean-up 40, and the free version of Zone Alarm Firewall on my computer. I removed SpySweeper because of too many conflicts. Should I keep all the programs that I have? What can I do to keep from getting this type of hijacker again?

Once again; thank you from the bottom of my heart. I plan on making a donation as soon as I can if you accept them and I'm also looking at your other services such as web hosting.

Have a Great Day!!!! You just made mine brighter. :help: ;) :tazz:

Hi Snowfluff,

Its good that your PC is better already.

You can leave this entry as it is -
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96B-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\
"UpperFilters" = INFECTION WARNING! "samfilt" ["Dolphin, Inc."]

We need to take these steps to make sure that your PC performs even better.

Anti-Virus Program

You are currently using Norton Anti-virus program. You have installed the complete suite of Norton Systemworks. Along with the Anti-virus program, you have a number of other programs like Norton Utilities, Norton Go Back etc. These programs do not afford any significant benefits to the common user.

If your subscription for Norton is due for expiry, you may consider installing another anti-virus program - AVG Anti-Virus --- a freeware.

Please note that running more than one anti-virus programs would seriously effect your PC without providing any additional protection.

Anti-Spyware Programs

I advise you to uninstall Microsoft AntiSpyware as it is only a Beta version. You can instead install these programs to protect against spyware -

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs.
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources.
SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation and browser hijack attempts. Both have free ongoing updates.

Please note that running more than one Anti-spyware would seriously effect your PC without providing any additional protection.

Other Resource Hogs

You can remove these programs from the running entries. Fixing these programs through Hijack This would remove them from the running processes but leave them on your PC to be manually run, if you choose to do so. This would free up your system resources. These programs were installed by your ISP and are used for monitoring the performance of your PC. These are not critical process.

Run Hijack This and click on Scan.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightMonitor 02] "C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPMon32.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightLAN 02] "C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPClient.exe" -l

Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

Reboot the PC and post a fresh Hijack This log here to verify that everything is working fine.

Tampabelle,
I decided to leave Norton Systems works on because my subscription to it doesn't expire until 2006. I have had two other people suggest AVG Antivirus to me so next year I'll switch over to that.
I did remove Microsoft Antispyware.
I downloaded SpywareBlaster, but I haven't yet downloaded SpywareGuard because you said that running two of them wouldn't work well. I did copy/paste everything you have posted to me in a special folder to keep.
I have one fast question. When I run Ad-aware or Norton anti-virus and if HTJ or Silent runners shows up as malicious or spyware, will it be ok to remove these malicious or spyware files if prompted to do so by Ad-aware or Norton anti-virus?
I removed both Visual Networks files and everything seems fine. Here's my latest HTJ Log, and once again I thank you. I'll be telling everyone I know about Geeks to Go! :tazz: ;)

Hi Snowfluff,

CONGRATULATIONS !!! Your PC is clean :tazz:

Well regarding your queries, u can have both Spyware Guard and Spyware Blaster. They do different things and therefore both can be installed. The reason why I told you that 2 programs were a no-no was to make sure that u dont that the Spyware Blaster / Guard combo and Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

Please be very careful with the programs you have downloaded. Using these programs and acting on the scan results without proper supervision / understanding can lead to important files / programs being deleted / terminated. This could unstabilize your PC and may even require a format of hard disk or re-install of the Operating System. Remember we found a file in Silent runners but still left it alone. ;) Seek help if required but dont act on half or no knowledge.

Well the best thing you can do for us is to spread the message that people should be more careful when surfing the internet. Due care should be taken as to which sites are visited and which files are downloaded and installed on the PC. You and others you know can take these following measure to ensure your PC remains clean -

PREVENTIVE MEASURES FOR FUTURE
You should take these steps to ensure that your system remains clean.

Operating System
1. Keep the Windows and Internet Explorer updated with the latest fixes. These fixes are available free from Microsoft. Click on Tools in the IE menu bar and then on Windows update. You can also the following links

Windows security and critical updates
Internet Explorer security and critical updates

Also ensure that automatic updates are enabled for faster updation of the system.
(Right click on My Computer on your desktop, properties and Automatic Updates tab.

Anti-Virus Software
2. Keep your Anti-virus program updated with the latest definitions. Some of the common anti-virus programs in use are :

Norton Anti-Virus
McAfee Anti-Virus
AVG Anti-Virus --- freeware
Avast Home Edition --- freeware

Use only one anti-virus program as multiple such programs can create conflicts between themselves and severely hamper the performance of your PC.

Firewall
3. You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
Sygate Personal Firewall, Kerio Personal Firewall, ZoneAlarm

Internet Browsers
4. Have robust explorer settings. It is preferable to use an internet browser other that IE as most of the malware is targetted at IE. In case you prefer to use IE, then download a list of innocent looking but harmful websites from IE-Spyad and install it on ur PC. IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your internet explorer's restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't really innocent at all.

Some alternate browsers I suggest are Firefox Mozilla Browser and Opera

Ensure that Security level, irrespective of whichever browser you use, is set at Medium or higher, restrict the usage of cookies and activeX components.

Spyware Protection
5. Have a wall of protection against spyware / adware by installing SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard.

Spyware Removers
6. Install programs for scanning for malware and uninstalling them. Two of the best programs, both are freeware, are :

Spybot Search & Destroy - A powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

AdAware SE Personal Edition - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.

Regular Maintenance of PC
7. Finally, invest some time for regular maintenance of your PC. Delete the temporary Internet files, temporary files, cookies etc. Click on Start button, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and run the program Disk Cleanup. Follow the instructions.

An alternate freeware software which can be used is CleanUp.

Keep your Registry clean. My favourite software is Registry First Aid. This is not a freeware but a trial version can be downloaded.

System Restore Points
8. Since your PC is currently clean, create a system restore point. A system restore would enable you to revert to the settings on the PC when the restore point was created. It is also a good idea to flush all earlier system restore points which may be containing infected files.

A. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

B. Restart your computer.

C. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Go ahead and enjoy a clean PC !!!!!!!!!!!!!
