Getting intermittent problem with HP Pavilion 7855 on boot-up - "Operating System Not Found". Tried re-ordering boot devices in setup, and re-seating all internal cables but still no good. Any ideas?

intermittant is key

1. this is caused by bad bios settings
2. damaged hard disk is damaged.
3. the 0 Sector has an incorrect or bad Master Boot Record (MBR).

we can usually rule out 1, since it is intermittent. It could be a motherboard going bad, but let's hope not. Still drop into bios (f1, f2 or del) at boot up and see if you have a function to redetect the drive (change the setting from automatic, to manual, then back, or hit enter on the drive to redetect)

for two, start > run
cmd
enter
type
chkdsk /r
at the command prompt, say yes to reboot and reboot--will take a while

for three, reboot into the recovery console and type
fixmbr

How to install the recovery console
