There may be crossed wires here as I did not mean the drivers I meant uninstall the device itself, have you done this?

You mean unistall the Disk Drive?

I have already uninstalled the CyberLink PowerDVD 9 before I uninstalled the windows update yesterday, but it didn't do the trick.
I will try the VLC.

Yes then restart the computer and allow the hardware wizard to reinstall the drive.

Try the suggested software first though.

I tried installing both softwares: VLC and MPC, but they can't recognize the BluRay and DVD discs as well. They can just read the audio CDs.

I also tried uninstalling the device via Device Manager, then reboot -- didn't solved the problem. Still can't read BluRay and DVD discs.

I did the steps from this HP page - Drive Cannot Read Discs (Windows 7) http://h10025.www1.h...ct=4317564#N740 and on Step 6: Use the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter, I got this on the result:

Troubleshooting report:

Issues found:
Hardware changes might not have been detected

Potential issues that were checked:
Windows Update configured to never install drivers (Issue not present)
- Driver updates aren't automatically installed when detected by Windows Update.

Could that have been the problem?

Hard to say unless you have changed the settings and the drive now works as it should.

If you have not changed the update settings http://windows.micro...u-about-updates

Yes, I tried that link and selected this option:
Testing the drive to see if it can read files on the DVD or Blu-ray movie disc

And from there, I went to this page:
Drive Cannot Read Discs in Windows 7

I tried the steps on that page until I reached Step 6: Use the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter, and got the result that I quoted on my last post.

Can't remember if the windows update settings was changed before. Could I change it back to default? Or will it help if I restore the laptop to factory settings? That would mean removing everything.

From my post #21 http://windows.micro...u-about-updates see if updates are set to Automatic Install.

These are the options selected on Windows Update:
Install updates automatically (recommended)
Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates
Allow all users to install updates on this computer

So that means nothing is being blocked during updates, right? And the troubleshooting report I quoted earlier regarding "Driver updates aren't automatically installed when detected by Windows Update." is just a potential issue.

Hi there, my apologies for not being able to reply for a couple of days. We've just decided to replace the DVD drive. We were able to remove and replace the DVD drive with the instructions from this HP page:
http://h10025.www1.h...product=4317564

Thank you so much for your patience and help. You've done a really great job on assisting me with my computer issue. I really do greatly appreciate it.

All the best!
