Ron is correct. The most recent Service pack for Win7 is SP1. Above you posted that SP1 is displayed on the Systems page. I see no need to download SP1 .ISO

Check your update history:

Start > Control Panel > Windows Updates > Installed Updates (under See also Installed Updates lower left pane)

Scroll down and under Microsoft Windows you should find:

Service Pack for Microsoft Windows (KB976932)


Have you tried a System Restore to a time before this occurred?

Ok, I see it, its in there.

I cannot use system restore as my oldest restore point is when this was still going on.

so i'm on my laptop now.

I ran windows update, and then my pc restarted. first restart it ran chkdsk, 2nd it ran chkdsk again.

Now i'm stuck on windows startup repair.

Before, it asked me to login under "other user". I'm the only user for this computer, and ive never had a log-in screen, so that was kind of scary, so i restarted again, and am still on the windows startup repair.

This doesn't look good! Could it be my mobo? RAM? Hard Drive?

We can test the hard drive by doing the following.

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, try the Hitachi DFT CD Image version of the software

3rd one is the right one. DOS CD ISO is what it should be. Then follow the instructions on how to burn it correctly so that the disc will be bootable.

ok, i have that burned to a CD.
I am running memtest right now, so ill run this after that.

Memtest needs to run 6 complete passes with every pass having several tests in it. Don't plan on it finishing quickly. If you start to see the red error messages at the bottom of the screen then you will know there is a problem with the memory itself.

Still a chance to get the data off the drive using Puppy Linux to access the drive. We will do that next if need be.

ok, ran 6 passes of memtest, both on standard options, no problems detected. time to try out the hard drive.

OK memtest ran 6 tests so that is 1 pass correct?
