can't open a link sent to my email

When I receive an email with a link to a website I am unable to open that website. I opened default program & clicked on IE, it responds "this program has all its defaults". Is this correct? Can anyone tell me what i can do to fix this? I've only had windows 7 for about a week & still learning. thanks.
