I'm having problems that include Google Chrome not able to connect to the internet. IE does fine. Norton Antivirus is disabled. Removal and scan tools can't connect to the interenet to update including Malwarebytes, but when I ran it originally it quarantined rogue.winantivirus and two instances of pum.disabled.securitycenter in the registry.

Hello commanderk,
:welcome:. My name is godawgs and I will be assisting you with your Virus / Malware issues.

I am currently still in training and my posts have to be approved by an expert so please expect a delay between my posts.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at GeeksToGo we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

I will start working on your Malware issues. This may, or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.
If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then carefully follow all future instructions:

I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same.
Because of this, you must reply within four days. If you haven't replied within that time, the topic will be closed! If you need additional time to complete things, just let me know.
  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • All tools must be run from an account with Administrator privileges.
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Please read all of my response through at least once before attempting to follow the procedures described. I would recommend printing them out, if you can, so you can check off each step as you complete it.
Also, part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer, installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry or running any tools, unless instructed to do so. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date (if possible)!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post unless directed otherwise.
  • Lastly, Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. Some infections are so severe that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system. Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but, sadly, it does happen.
In light of this be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

I am reviewing your log. In the mean time I want you to get some additional information. When you ran OTL it should have produced 2 logs. I need the Extras.txt log. It should be on the desktop.

Let's see what else we can find.

Step-1.

Run aswMBR
  • Download aswMBR.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe file to run it. (Windows /7 users: Right click the file and click Run as Administrator. If you get a UAC window, allow the file to run.
  • If it asks you if you want to download the latest virus definitions, click Yes
  • Click the "Scan" button to start the scan
    Posted Image
  • On completion of the scan click save log. Save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.
    Posted Image
NOTE: When you run aswMBR, if it is shutdown automatically, then it is most likely the infection detecting that aswMBR is running and terminating it. In this situation you should rename executable to iexplore.exe and try it again.

Step-2.

Things For Your Next Post:
1. The Extras.txt log
2. The aswMBR log

Hi commanderk,

Since this is a work computer I need you to confirm with your IT department that they are happy to have GeeksToGo assist with this problem. If they are:

You have 3 AntiVirus programs. Immunet Protect, Microsoft Security Essentials are currently running and Norton Security Suite isn't. But it is on the system.

You need to find out from your IT department which AntiVirus product they want on the system.

You should only have one anti-virus program installed and running. Anti-virus programs run in the background providing continuous protection of your system. It's called Real-Time Protection, or scanning, and it uses system resources as it runs. Two or more anti-virus programs running at the same time will use 2 or 3 times the ammount of system resources, or more. Because each program wants control of the system, there will be conflicts caused, including false positives. The end result is actually LESS anti-virus protection.

We need to get the AntiVirus products down to one. As soon as the IT department has given us the go ahead to help and you let us know which AntiVirus they want left on the system, we can completely uninstall the other two and proceed from there.

Hi godawgs. I am the IT department. I want Norton to be the antivirus program. It's free with my Comcast account. I left the others because I didn't want to change anything until you saw it.

Hi commanderk,

I am the IT department.

Fair enough! I don't really see a lot in the way of malware on the system. Any conflicts caused by duplicate AntiVirus products shouldn't have anything to do with Chrome.

The first thing we are going to do is completely uninstall the Immunet Protect and Microsoft Security Essentials AntiVirus programs. We are going to do this in two steps so we can be sure that one AntiVirus is completely uninstalled before we uninstall the next one.

We're going to use a tool to check for rogue AntiSpyware programs. Then we will remove what I see in the OTL log and take it from there.

What can you tell me about the ZeeWise Cars program installed on the computer? It shows to be a franchise management software.

Step-1.

Program uninstalls

1. Please click the Start Orb, click Control Panel. Under the Programs heading click Uninstall a program
2. In the list of programs installed, locate the following program(s):

Immunet 3.0

3. Click on each program to highlight it and click Uninstall
4. After the programs have been uninstalled, close the Installed Programs window and the Control Panel.
5. Reboot the computer.

Delete the folders associated with the uninstalled programs.

1. Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and click "Explore"), please delete the following folders(s) in red (if present):

C:\Program Files\Immunet
C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Administrator\Application Data\Immunet
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Immunet
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Immunet 3.0
C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Administrator\Application Data\Immunet

Delete the files associated with the uninstalled programs.

1. Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and click "Explore"), please delete the following files(s) in red (if present):

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\Immunet 3.0.lnk

2. Close Windows Explorer.

My research indicates that the proceedure above may not remove all remnants of the Immunet Protect program and it can be a bear to remove them manually so Immunet has created a uninstall tool to help insure that the program is completely removed.

Download the Immunet Protect Removal Tool 1.0.3.00
  • Right click the 1.0.3.00.exe file and click Run as Administrator and OK any UAC prompts to run the tool.
  • The computer should automatically reboot with a notice in 60 seconds
  • If the computer does nor reboot automatically, please manually reboot the computer.

Step-2.

Program uninstalls

1. Please click the Start Orb, click Control Panel. Under the Programs heading click Uninstall a program
2. In the list of programs installed, locate the following program(s):

Microsoft Security Essentials

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client

2. Close Windows Explorer.

Step-3.

Run RogueKiller

  • Download RogueKiller and save it on your desktop.
  • Quit all programs
  • Start RogueKiller.exe.
  • Wait until Prescan has finished ...
  • Click on Scan
Posted Image
  • Wait for the end of the scan.
  • The report has been created on the desktop.
  • Click on the Delete button.
Posted Image
  • The report has been created on the desktop.
  • Next click on the ShortcutsFix

    Posted Image
  • The report has been created on the desktop.
Please post:

All RKreport.txt text files located on your desktop.
NOTE: If RogueKiller has been blocked, do not hesitate to try a few times more. If really won't run, rename it to winlogon.exe (or winlogon.com) and try again

Step-4.

Posted Image OTL Fix

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

If you have Malwarebytes 1.6 or better installed please disable it for the duration of this run

I'm working on it. I'll have more tomorrow. Zee Wise Cars is a data collection program I'm obligated to have as part of my franchise agreement. It collects data out of Quickbooks.

Thanks.

1. How did the uninstalls go?
2. All of the RKReport.txt files
3. The OTL fixes log
4. The new OTL.txt log
5. Were you able to get Norton 360's auto protection enabled?
6. Are you using the firewall in Norton?

The uninstalls seemed to go fine. I couldn't get the uninstall program for Imunet to run, but Windows seemed to remove all the files you said to remove after the fact.

I still have the same issues with Chrome not working, MBAM can't update and I can't get Norton to run. No icon in the tray and the program won't start when you click on it in the programs menu.

The computer boots faster and doesn't hang now, so things are getting better.

Thanks for your help so far.

Hi commanderk,

RogueKiller found a couple of things. The unknown hooked entries under the Driver:[LOADED] section looks like a bad uninstall of a firewall or an antivirus program. Given the number of Antivirus programs that were on the system at the same time, your Norton antivirus has probably been broken. AntiVirus programs are notorious for failing to work properly until the other programs have been completely uninstalled.

An incomplete Norton installation or removal is also one of the causes I've found for Chrome not being able to connect to the internet.

We are going to use the specialized tools provided by the AV software manufacturers to completely uninstall Norton. And there are remnants of the BitDefender AV still on the system so we will use their tool to completely remove it.

After that is done and before you reinstall Norton, I want you to check and see if Chrome can access the internet.

MalwareBytes not being able to update is either because it already has the most current definitions or because something happened to it's installation. So we will use the removal tool from MalwareBytes to completely remove it and then reinstall it.

OTL did it's job, but the IE search redirects that we removed in the last OTL fix have returned and I need to ask you about them. The search engine is being redirected to xxxx://ie.redirect.h...ARIO&pf=desktop which appears to be a Hewlett Packard web site.

Also this 017 entry in the OTL log:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{892900FC-9814-4488-99C0-81491C1EE93D}: DhcpNameServer = 16.92.3.242 16.92.3.243 16.81.3.243 16.118.3.243 shows IP addresses that belong to Hewlett Packard.

Is there any reason that you need to connect to the Hewlett Packard web sites?

Step-1

Program uninstalls

1. Please click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
2. In the list of programs installed, locate the following program(s):

Norton Security Suite

3. Click on each program to highlight it and click Change/Remove.
4. After the programs have been uninstalled, close the Installed Programs window and the Control Panel.
5. Reboot the computer.

Delete the folders associated with the uninstalled programs.(Only do this if you uninstalled the program)

1. Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and click "Explore"), please delete the following folders(s) in red (if present):

C:\Program Files\Norton Security Suite
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\N360

2. Close Windows Explorer.

Run the Norton Cleanup Tool

  • Download the Norton Removal Tool.
  • Save the file to the Windows desktop.
  • Close all windows and browsers.
  • On the Windows desktop, double-click the Norton Removal Tool icon.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
Restart your computer

Step-2.

Run the BitDefender Cleanup Tool

  • Download the BitDefender Uninstall Tool and save to the Desktop. This tool can be used for both 32 bit and 64 bit operating systems.
  • After the download completes go to the location where you downloaded and run (double-click) it;
  • After a couple of moments the uninstall tool interface will appear;
    Posted Image
  • Click Uninstall;
  • Wait for the tool to display the completion message and then restart your computer.

Step-3.

See if Chrome will connect to the internet with all Antivirus programs uninstalled. If it will, one of the AV's was probably the culprit.
If it still won't connect to the internet let me know. There are some other things we can look at.

Step-4.

See if you can update MalwareBytes. If it still won't update:

Program uninstalls

1. Please click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
2. In the list of programs installed, locate the following program(s):

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware version 1.61.0.1400

C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Administrator\Application Data\Malwarebytes

2. Close Windows Explorer.

Run the MalwareBytes Cleanup Tool

MBAM CleanUp Tool

1.Download and save MBAM Cleanup Utility to your Computer.

2.Run the tool, this utility asks you to restart your computer to complete the uninstall process.

3.Reboot your Computer, Malwarebytes’ anti-malware will be completely removed from your Computer.

Step-5.

Posted ImageMalwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Once downloaded, close all programs and browsers on your computer.

Double Click the mbam-setup.exe file to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, keep following the prompts in order to continue with the installation process. Do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When the program has finished installing, make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • MBAM will now automatically start and you will see a message stating that you should update the program before performing a scan.
  • As MBAM will automatically update itself after the install, you can press the OK button to close that box and you will now be at the main program as shown below.

    Posted Image
  • On the Scanner tab, make sure the the Quick scan option is selected and then click on the Scan button to start scanning your computer.
  • MBAM will now start scanning your computer for malware. This process can take quite a while, so I suggest you go and do something else and periodically check on the status of the scan. When MBAM is scanning it will look like the image below.

    Posted Image
  • When the scan is finished a message box will appear as shown in the image below.

    Posted Image
You should click on the OK button to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • You will now be back at the main Scanner screen. At this point you should click on the Show Results button.
  • A screen displaying all the malware that the program found will be shown as seen in the image below. Please note that the infections found may be different than what is shown in the image.

    Posted Image
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

I would suggest that you keep this antimalware program. Run a Quick Scan frequently and a Full Scan every week or so. Update the definition files before running a scan. Click the Update tab and update from there.

Step-6.

Reinstall Norton Security Suite

Please go to this Norton page and follow the instructions there to reinstall the Norton Security Suite from Comcast.

Make sure that the Norton AV works. If you were able to get on the internet using Chrome when all AV's were uninstalled, see if you can get on the internet using Chrome now. If you can't it's something in the Norton AV or Norton Firewall settings.

Step-7.

Things For Your Next Post:
1. Let me know how the uninstalls went.
2. Let me know how the Cleanup tools ran
3. Were you able to get on line with Chrome after the Av's were completely uninstalled but before Norton was reinstalled?
4. Is MalwareBytes working properly now?
5. Please answer my question about the Hewlett Packard web sites that I asked earlier.

I can't uninstall Norton from Windows Uninstaller. Should I continue with the Norton Removal Tool?

The computer is a HP. Maybe that's why the redirects are there. They don't need to be there for my purposes.
