Hello,

Here is a picture of my problem:

http://i45.tinypic.com/24yadmg.png

This problem randomly began yesterday (didn't install/download anything at all) and I don't understand how to fix it. The problem is something to do with my laptop and not the wifi because I am currently on another laptop and it is able to grab the network connections perfectly fine.

Note: The wifi is on, I haven't switched it off from that switch most laptop have externally.

Thank you to whoever helps me!

Go to device manager and see if there are any warnings on the network adaptors.

If so please post the details.

If you attach anything please do so as a screenshot on your reply, not as a file that I have to open.

If you cannot connect hard wired, you will have to copy from this laptop to the other and then attach it. - please

screenshot is prt scrn key, open paint

click edit and paste

click file and save as, change file type from bitmap to jpeg and save

on reply go advanced and follow notes there for click to attach.

What have you tried to date please, on the attachment you sent have you clicked on troubleshooter to obtain a diagnosis of the error from windows
and what is shown on change adaptor settings left pane

I suspect the driver for the wireless adaptor

Please include in your reply the make and full model of the laptop

Thanks alot!

There's no warnings under network adapters in my device manager.

The troubleshooter was no help it doesn't solve the issue or say what is wrong.

Here is a picture of the left pane "change adapter settings" : http://i45.tinypic.com/2wm2d02.png

My laptop is: Toshiba Satellite L300D

and is the Atheros one shown in device manager under network adaptors

on the image you sent right click it, click repair.

If that does not work, go device manager, expand network adaptors, right click the atheros, uninstall and reboot the laptop
please send future ones as screenshots

Yes atheros is under network adapters.

And regarding repair, I have no option to? I clicked diagnose instead but that opened up troubleshooter which was again no help.

edit: Didn't see your last sentence. Will do what you said and post the results. Thanks again.

Okay so I uninstalled and then when I rebooted, the adaptor that I uninstalled previously, re-installed again on it's own. Problem is still not fixed though.

If you right click the connection and click Connect what happens then please - if no luck

click once on the device and then click view the status of this device on the menu bar - that is in network connections

then on the window that opens click wireless properties.

Ensure that you are trying to connect to the correct modem/router

See my screenshot here, as the adaptor is clearly receiving the signal, the bars on your screenshot are green
the problem is the security to access the router or the fact that somehow you are attempting to connect to the wrong network

[attachment=57754:Untitled.jpg]

Also from your previous screenshot, DISABLE that virtual wifi Miniport shown.

It creates a virtual connection , making windows think that instead of one, you have two or more cards installed on your system. Keep in mind though, that the maximum bandwidth of your card will be splitt when using this. It lets you connect to more than one network at a time. For instance, an Ad-Hoc network and an Access Point at the same time. An access point and a wireless printer at the same time.

In fact try that first please

To Add to Macboatmaster`s Post , if his suggestions do not work, please do the following.

Have you tried a system restore to when the internet was working? If a system restore doesnt work then see the steps laid out for you below.
http://windows.micro...-System-Restore

If this is a vista or windows 7 machine please right click and run as admin for the programs below. You will need to tranasfer these files to the sick machine via cd or thumb drive then also transfer the logs in the same way. :)

Please download FarbarServiceScanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
http://download.blee.../farbar/FSS.exe

Make sure the following options are checked:
Internet Services
Windows Firewall
System Restore
Security Center/Action Center
Windows Update

Press "Scan".
It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:

  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP Configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices - Only Problems
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
  • Click Go and post the result.

Macboatmaster,

When I click connect, the dialog box on the bottom right screen that says "Not connected, no connections are available, troubleshoot" comes up.

I am in network connections, but I don't understand what to do from there? I clicked on the Atheros icon thing in the following picture, but then no option "view the status of this device" comes up?

http://i49.tinypic.com/kex7cn.png

Rockmilk,

I will do what you said hopefully within 30 minutes. I will post my results ASAP.

Thank you both for your help

Try this please

  • Open Network Connections by clicking the Start button clicking Control Panel, clicking Network and Internet, clicking Network and Sharing Center, and then clicking Manage network connections.
  • Right-click the wireless adaptor connection and then click Properties
  • Click the Networking tab. Under This connection uses the following items, click the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) then click the properties button below the small window
  • On the window that opens , check that Obtain an IP address automatically, is checked, if not do so and then the same with DNS server
Repeat the procedure with IPV6 back on the original window that opened when you clicked properties in the first place.

click OK and close to exit as necessary and reboot and then see what happens.

What is the make and model please of the modem router to which you are trying to connect and who is the service provider.

Network and sharing centre - left pane change adaptor settings - right click the wireless adaptor - go from there please.

Sorry about the wording of the copy and paste - you clicked manage wireless networks

Okay thanks but that doesn't help because under both Internet Protocol versions 4 and 6, I already had both of them set to obtain an IP address automatically.
