Having an issue with google redirects in IE9. First noticed about a week ago. Have not noticed yet in Firefox (though have not done much browsing in FF).

As soon as the redirect happened for the 2nd time, I scanned with Malwarebytes (posted log below OTL log). Info I read online says that Trojan.Medfros comes in through errors in java? I know I haven't downloaded the most recent updates, and I'm guessing that's how I picked it up (dumb on my part).

Other than the google redirects, the computer is running normally. Nothing crazy has happened...yet. i'd like to keep it that way.

I have tried ~15 different common commercial websites off google searches. I had NO redirects. From my previous two experiences, a redirect should have occurred within that number of searches.

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

• Click Start.
• Open My Computer.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
• Select the View Tab.
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
• Click Yes to confirm.
• Click OK.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application.

Upgrading Java:

• Go to this site and click Do I have Java
• It will check your current version and then offer to update to the latest version

SPRING CLEAN

To manually create a new Restore Point

• Go to Control Panel and select System
• Select System
• On the left select System Protection and accept the warning if you get one
• Select System Protection Tab
• Select Create at the bottom
• Type in a name i.e. Clean
• Select Create

Now we can purge the infected ones

• GoStart > All programs > Accessories > system tools
• Right click Disc cleanup and select run as administrator
• Select Your main drive and accept the warning if you get one
• For a few moments the system will make some calculations
• Select the More Options tab
• In the System Restore and Shadow Backups select Clean up
• Select Delete on the pop up
• Select OK
• Select Delete

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes. Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit

So the computer that we worked on this weekend acted normal for the rest of the weekend.

However, my laptop (that I use on weekdays) has been redirecting at the end of last week and again this morning. It is usually redirecting when I am on chicagotribune.com and click on a story. Also occasional google redirects in both IE9 and FF. I have also been getting a plethora of pop-up ads and on screen ads that move around I never used to get prior to the end of last week.

Malawarebytes is not detecting anything, so I am not sure what the exact problem is. I updated java at the end of last week and windows updates should be up to date.

• Then click the Run Fix button at the top
• Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
• Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

So I ran the fix. It did everything through the reboot and posted a log with the last line stating "Registry entries deleted on Reboot...."

Now it's been hung up in that spot for about an hour. (With the little circle just spinning as if it is working). No icons have come back and I cannot access any menus.

I am posting this from another computer.

So I ended up restarting the computer. The redirects and ad issues are no longer present as far as I can tell.

That was all that was needed, a reboot. Could you post a fresh OTL scan please to ensur ethat the host file was replaced correctly, also any other apparent problems ?
