I will get right to the point,
My Dell n5010 Insprion laptop was working pretty much normal, I was away from it for a few days when i got onto it 2nite i noticed that the McAfee subscription that came with it had run out 2 days ago, my kids and wife have been using it with no virus protection at all for 2 days!!!

Anyway I wanted to remove McAfee and downloand mircosoft security essentials. I used the add/remove program to select remove Mcafee, when it rebooted after removal it said there was corruption or something and to use chkdsk.

At this point I can start the computer and get to my desktop but cant click on any icon or even get taskmanager to start...I don't know if i have a virus or what but I need help PLEASE....

thanks

Welcome to GTG. Let's help you out with your computer issue.

Are you able to open programs in Safe Mode?

In order to enter Safe Mode, repeatedly tap F8 right before the Windows loading screen appears and a list of menu options should appear. Select Safe Mode with Networking and press Enter.

After a screen or two, login as your usual user account and then press Yes when prompted.

Situation has changed....a little.

When I couldnt do anything on my desktop I could get into safemode, but...

I was getting frustrated with everything so I did a system restore and now am able to use the laptop desktop.

I downloaded MSE, but I have issues...McAfee security is still on my computer, but no longer has an active subscription.
***I go to add/remove programs and try to remove it but the box that pops up to select what I want to remove after i click on the McAfee program is like cut in half..hard to explain..but the remove button I am suppose to click on only half of it shows and when I click that half button nothing happens.
***In the "message center"/"action center"it tells me to choose a firewall - McAfee or Windows or go online to get one, it doesn't matter though cause when I click on either one nothing happens, the box just goes away.

So far I think those are the 2 main issues i am having, wanting to remove McAfee and not being able to turn on a firewall. Is it because I have both MSE and McAfee on my laptop???
I may have multiple other issues due to kid usage and no anti virus for 3 days, but help would be appreciated. I just want the laptop back to a smooth running machine.

thanks

Ok, use AppRemover and see if that helps you uninstall McAfee. Let me know if you need help with running it.

Please download AppRemover from here and install to the desktop.

  • Double click the icon and click Run
  • Click Next>>
  • Under Select Removal Type click on Remove Security Application then click on Next>>
  • The program will perform a detailed scan on your computer for security applications.
  • Once it is finished:
  • Click Next>>
  • In the next pane place a check mark next to the AV that you would like to uninstall and click Next>>.

It should be easy to use.

I ran Appremover and it said that McAfee should be removed and to reboot.

So I rebooted the laptop and when it came back on, McAfee is still on it(all icons, start menu,add/remove programs) and I can no longer gain access to the internet.

I ran the trouble shooter for the network and it said no problem found...so now I have real issues, any advice???

thanks
josh

Ok, try this. Go to Command Prompt and type in the following:

netsh winsock reset catalog

and press Enter.

If that doesn't restore the Internet for you, don't panic. This can be fixed easy and is likely caused by a corruption with McAfee.

Next:
Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the OTL icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Select All Users
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    safebootnetwork
    activex
    netsvcs
    drivers32
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
    %PROGRAMFILES%\*.*
    %APPDATA%\*.*
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Post both logs

Use the computer that you're posting from to download OTL and via a USB stick transfer to the computer with issues.

As for the administrator thing, here's what you do.

Click on that Start button at the bottom left for the Start menu to popup. You see the part at the bottom where you can type in stuff?

Type inside that blank box: cmd

Now you should see cmd (or Command Prompt) come up at the top of the Start popup.

Right click it and select Run as administrator.

The Command Prompt should open.

Type in the following:

netsh winsock reset

and press Enter.

Download the removal tool from:

http://download.mcaf...atches/MCPR.exe

Click Save, and save the file to a folder on your computer.
Navigate to the folder where you saved the file.
Double-click MCPR.exe to run the removal tool.

NOTE: Windows Vista users must right-click MCPR.exe and select Run as Administrator.

When you receive the message CleanUp Successful, restart your computer. Your McAfee product will not be fully removed until the system is restarted.

You're welcome. That's some good news. Give Microsoft Security Essentials a quick scan and tell me if it detects anything suspicious.
