Welcome to Geeks to Go

, integrated ATI Radeon Xpress 200 graphics

I am sorry to inform you that with 512MB of ram installed, of which you will not have 512 available, for use, as the integrated graphics will demand up to 128Mb, you are NEVER going to have a properly running system.

The accepted minimum ram for XP SP3 is 1GB.

The fact that Microsoft state that the minimum is 128 Mb is frequently misnterpreted. That is the MINIMUM for ONLY the windows operating system, it does not take account of the integrated graphics as I have mentioned above or other software on the computer such as Office programs etc. and it certainly does not cater for gaming.

In relation to the DirectX
9.0 is the version form XP and if you have SP3 you will have 9.
Ensure Windows updates are kept up to date as they include updates to Direct X>

See this
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/179113

and here is how to check which you have
  • Click Start, and then click Run.
  • Type dxdiag, and then click OK.
  • On the System tab, note the version of DirectX that is displayed on the DirectX Version line.

Well you already had 512, if that was in two 256Mb then yes - two 512 will be an improvement

It all depends on what you had - how the 512 was made up and how many ram slots are on the motherboard and what it can support

However the main question of course was regarding the directX and you need to do as I suggested and see which directx you are running

If you have SP3 as I said you are very likely running directX 9

1.Open My Computer, right click C Drive, presuming that is the letter of the drive on which windows is installed
click properties
click tools
click error checking
click check now
click to check both boxes - file system errors and scan for etc.
click start
agree to run on restart and do so

Do not interrupt it is a five stage check

On completion go Control Panel
Admin Tools
event viewer
click application in left pane
on the main window click once on the heading source
that will sort them alphabetically
now find the winlogon entries
double click the most recent
check that it is the chk dsk results from the check that you have just run
When you find the right entry, click once on the double page symbol to the right near to the up and down arrows
Then on your reply right click and paste

Or save it to wordpad and then copy it and paste, as the results please not as a file attached.

Examine the results yourself, if there are NO BAD SECTORS shown, then the state of the actual drive is OK, as far as we can tell at this stage.

If there are bad sectors, it MAY be the cause of this and other problems if you have any

If there are NO BAD SECTORS try this

https://support.goog...n&answer=142059

step four is vital so that you can return to that profile if necessary.
