We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP, or Service Pack 4 if you are running Win2k. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

Hi Again,

Lets get this show on the road..

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

This will likely be a few step process in removing the malware that has infected your system. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

You have a nasty CoolWebSearch infection and a nasty Nail infection and i don't mean the one's on your fingers and toes :tazz:

You also have an antivirus product from a very dubious company Win Anti Virus (WinAntivirus , an antivirus product with very suspicous marketing practices. Their site/product are designed to look very similar to Symantec's Norton Antivirus, and tricked several people into thinking they were buying a new version os Norton. In addition, they've registered the domain symantic.com in an obvious attempt to further the misconception that this is Symantec's Norton Antivirus. There are also unconfirmed reports of this (either through unwanted install or through regular internet ad popups) popping up false warnings that a user's Norton Antivirus subscription has expired and trying to get you to buy their product, presumably under the assumption that this is a new version of Norton.

i suggest you remove it via ADD/REMOVE in Control panel and replace it with a very good free antivirus called AVG from the following link. Do not click on the Trial, but on the installation files under the orange box near the botom.

AVG FREE

A malicious .DLL file is disrupting the LSP chain on your computer. We need to get rid of it.

1. Please download LSPFix from here.
2. Run the LSPFix.exe that you have just finished downloading.
3. Check the I know what I'm doing box.
4. In the Keep box you may see one or more instances of mailscan.dll.
5. Select every instance of mailscan.dll and move each one to the Remove box by clicking the >> button.
6. When you are done click Finish>>.

This may longer exist if you have uninstalled Win Antivirus and if this is the cae and you cannot see mailscan.dll then that is ok

Next we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problems. Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY HERE
Download CWShredder Here.
Download SpSeHjfix Here.

Download a free 14 day trial of ewido from the link below. Install it and start it up. Follow the prompts to upgrade it, then close it down.

ewido

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://users.pandora...chy/nailfix.zip
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Please download Cleanup from here:
Cleanup. Do not run it yet.

Set PC to show hidden files (click link if you do not know how)LINK

Unzip SpSeHjfix to its own folder (ie c:\SpSeHjfix)

Run the CleanUp! installer. You dont need to do anything with it right now.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find: System Startup Service (SvcProc) .
Rightclick and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK.

then in services window find: WebSeach Toolbar support NT service
Rightclick and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK.

Then in sertvices window find: WinTools for IE service
Rightclick and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK.

Exit the Services utility.

Carry out a free online virus scan from the following link. Type in name, for company type anything you like, add email address in relevant boxes.

Kaspersky

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.bat. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run SpSeHjfix. A log will be saved in the same folder that you put the exe into. Please post the results of that log in your next reply.

Warning Note: On a few occasions it has been reported that after using the SPSEHjfix you cannot open Internet Explorer. To fix this, go into Control Panel >Internet Options >Programs & press reset web settings, then you can set your home page to what you want on the general tab.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. This may take some time, so go grab a coffee. Once it finds the first issue tick the box for all. Post the log from the scan here for me.

Now scan with HJT and check the following entries if they are there. Some may have been removed by earlier procedures.

Bear with me.. I'm an idiot.. but in the LSPFix download, I see files that end in .dll.. should I delete these, or just the ones that specifically say mailscan.dll?

Sorry..

Karen

Ok.. thanks.. now another problem. Going along great, your instructions are clear and not confusing at all, but when I got to the download for Nailfix, I got a message saying that Internet Explorer could not open from that site. I've tried the URL in the browser but I get a 404 error message. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
karen

Ok.. here we go.. I am not getting nearly as many pop-ups.. :tazz: Also, I am now able to download and run the Cleanup program and the most amazing part is that I am now able to download Windows XP service pack 2. Previously, with every attempt made at a download I had always received an "access denied" error message.

How does it look?

Hi Karen,

Check to see if the link to Cleanup works now and if so download it, but do not run it yet.
If it doesn't work try this for a different program.

CClearner

There are a few things we need to hit again, but things are definately looking better.

Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find: Service: WebSeach Toolbar support NT service
Rightclick and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK. Exit the services utility.

Reboot your PC into SAFE MODE again (the F8 routine)

Rescan with HJT and check the following entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8952A998-1E7E-4716-B23D-3DBE03910972} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [zmkrxbu] c:\windows\system32\tnuzxnw.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TBPS] C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPS.exe
O23 - Service: WebSeach Toolbar support NT service (TBPSSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPSSvc.exe (file missing)

Ensure no windows open except HJT and click FIX CHECKED.

Now with HJT , CLICK ON misc tools section, then on Delete an NT Service. In the popup box, copy and paste the following:

TBPSSvc

OK it.

Ensure PC set up to show hidden files.

Using Windows explorer locate and delete the following, if found:

C:\Program Files\Toolbar <<<----entire folder
c:\windows\system32\tnuzxnw.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Karen\Cookies\[email protected][1].txt

Now run Cleanup/CCleaner to clear out temp files/junk.

Reboot pc normally, rescan with HJT and post the log back
