Hello Dear Geeks to Go,

I am really worried about my computer because it wont boot even to the screen where the safe mode options are. So the problem began 2-3 weeks ago when I would load my Facebook page on my google and chrome and it would slow eveything down on my computer, so I referred back to the issue and resolution that I got from you all previously on a similar problem that I had. here is the reference link to that specific topic: My link. So, i followed all those instructions thinking that it would help with this new infection because it seemed like it was a similar thing. I am not sure if I was wrong about my "analysis" of this problem, but these steps only helped my computer for a day. In the next couple of days, everything slowly went downhill. First, it would take forever to boot, then i would reboot and that would not solve anything. i would reboot in safe mode and that work for a little while. Finally, the computer got so bad it would not let me get to the screen where I could choose safe mode.
I ran some analysis under another screen that said something about "diagnostics" and while doing "tests" on the hardrive it indicated that there were several errors. I dont have those numbers right now, but I will update as soon as I get those. PS. I am writing from my work computer about this because I have no way of doing that from my own laptop cause it wont boot obviously.

i really appreciate your prompt help as i really need that laptop to do school work and i really dont want to erase everything that i have on there.

Unfortunately, if it's a hard drive issue as your post implies, then you might need to transfer all your needed files to another hard drive or a USB stick or something (depending on the size of the data you wish to save). First of all, let's make sure you back up all your needed data first.

Do you have something you can transfer your files to? Like an external hard drive or USB stick or anything of the sort?

Please expect delayed responses from me from time to time simply because any fixes I suggest need to first be approved by an expert.

I'll post my next set of instructions once approved. In the meantime, please let me know if you have anything to copy the files to.

Here is what you need to do.

  • Connect your USB stick to a clean computer.
  • From the clean computer, copy the following and paste it into a Notepad file.

    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe

  • Save the Notepad file to your USB stick. Save it as scan.txt
  • Download OTLPEStd.exe to your desktop.
  • Once downloaded, insert a blank CD in your burner and click on OTLPEStd.exe. The executable includes the OTLPE_New_Std.iso and a copy of imgburn, a program to burn .iso files. When executed, the application will extract both and start the burning process automatically.
  • Once the CD is burned, boot the Non working computer using the boot CD you just created. For more information, click here
    • Don't forget to connect the USB stick to the computer before you boot from the CD. And make sure whatever medium of storage you plan to use to back up your data is connected also before you boot from CD.

  • After a while, your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.


Back up your data now. Go to My Computer and double-click on the drive(s) where all your personal files are. Now transfer only your personal files to the medium of storage. If you have trouble with transferring any files you need, please let me know.

After you've backed up what you need, don't restart the computer or anything of the sort. Instead, stay within the Reatogo environment and do the following:

  • Go to Start and then Run. Then type in cmd. The Command Prompt should appear.
  • Type in the following:
    chkdsk /r c: > c:\chkdsk.txt

  • and press Enter
  • You might be asked a question by the Command Prompt before it does the chkdsk. Just type in Y and press Enter.
  • Now let it do its thing. This might take a while. Note that if you're up for it, look at the Command Prompt screen every now and then when it reaches Stage 4 and see if any bad sectors are mentioned being replaced. If you read about sectors, then this almost always (if not always) indicates a hard drive failure.


Once done, do the following:

  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start. Change the following settings
    • Change Drivers to All
    • Change Standard Registry to All
    • Under the Custom Scan box paste the contents of the Notepad file that you previously saved to your USB stick (scan.txt)

  • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
  • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
  • Copy C:\OTL.txt and C:\chkdsk.txt to your USB drive.
  • Please post the contents of both the C:\OTL.txt file and the C:\chkdsk.txt file in your next reply.

Hello again!
So i was able to do all the instructions up to booting my sick laptop, but the problem I encountered is that when I click on *My Computer* it does not let me load it. I have not backed up my files because it does not let me access my computer. It keep on saying that is searching for the contents and then "not responding". how can I proceed?

so after a while, i finally got access to "local disk" but the windows explorer came up with an error saying G:\is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

So just to get this straight. You can access the local disk and see all your data in there but another device labeled G: is not accessible?

What would that device labeled G: be if you know? What is it you're not able to access?

Just making sure what's going on first before we proceed.

What I meant was that I could not access the local disk or see my personal files so I need assistance in gaining access to back up my data. Sorry for the confusion there thanx!!

Ok, so your local drive is labeled G: not C:, am I right?

oh no, i dont think so. i just saw that error box come up on there when i was trying to access *my computer*. because it took forever to load and i was clicking around, the error might have come from another thing i clicked. but i think the local drive is always C.

My bad, my local disk is G. I tried the command you indicated but using g at the end. It ran the whole thing but after I went back to try to access my local disk it said "not responding" then it rebooted the reatogo environment on its own again and asked me to choose the windows explorer or command mode. I have tried accessing different things on 'my computer' and it won't let me, it just freezes. What you think?

I tried accessing my local disk g again and the error box came up. I tried accessing one of the USB jump drives I have connected to the laptop and it allowed me to c the files.

Yes, it seems "My Computer" is slow in loading because of that defective drive. I might have to refer you to the hardware section soon as I have suspected that this is a hard drive problem from the beginning. Unfortunately, if this is indeed a hard drive problem, I'm not sure any tech here would be able to help you from a distance to recover data from it, but it's worth a try. Otherwise, you may have to take the drive to data recovery specialists and have them attempt to recover the data for you. This latter method requires good money from you to pay so it's not cheap.
