OK let's try the Seagate tool it works with my Western Digital drive just fine and it may do better for you.

Go here at Seagate
Click the Downloads tab.
At Seatools for DOS, select your OS (Windows Vista 32 and 64 bit)
Click Download, click I accept, and Download to download the file (SeaTools223ALL.iso) and save it to your desktop.

Then run BurnCDCC that will burn the .ISO file go here and get burncdcc ..a small FAST no frills iso burning program...

NOTE...do not put a blank cd in until burncdcc opens the tray for you

1. Start BurnCDCC

2. Browse to the ISO file you want to burn on cd/dvd ....

3. Select the ISO file

4. click on Start

Once the disk is burned put it in the infected computer and boot up on it.

Please run the Extended test and report the results in your next reply.

After running the long test, it's giving me a window with the heading "long test errors" with three paragraphs. The first paragraph talks about warranty. The second one says "Unfortunately, your seagate hard drive has failed an important diagnostic test, possibly caused by problem sectors which are difficult to read. Now is a good time to make sure you have a current backup of your important data." The third paragraph says "Seagate recommends that you consider repairing the problem sectors. SeaTools for DOS may be able to save you from the inconvenience and down time of exchanging the drive. For more information on this subject see our help topic 'Bad Sector Found.'" After clicking out of that, I clicked on basic tests at the top again, even though it was grayed out, and another message came up with the title "errors detected during long test" followed by "errors detected on NON Seagate drive. It is suggested that you contact the maker of your disc drive for more information."

Yes that would be great. I know that I need a PATA drive, and the only one they had was for $138. I wasn't about to drop $138 to maybe fix my computer. What is your opinion on this? Can I get a hard drive for less than that? And is it worth it to repair this four year old computer if its gonna cost me more than a $100, rather than just buying a brand new one for $300-400. I'm kind of confused on which way to go on this so any help or opinions you have would be greatly appreciated.

This link says the drive is a SATA. But it may have a SATA to PATA interface installed on the end of it.

I see similar 250 Gb drives for $120 online.

You can ask in the hardware forum here for specific stores or good buys.

Now for my opinion, you need to do what you "want to do"

I have replaced hard drives in two different computers that run Windows XP that I have had since 2003. One I had to replace the hard drive, the laptop, in 2005 and it is still running great. The other, a desktop, I replaced the drive in 2010 and it is running well also.

If you decide to get the drive, your recovery DVD's will probably work even with the scratch, since the problem you had was primarily with the hard drive they were trying to write to. If however the disk is bad you can get a copy direct from HP for about $25.

But as you say a new computer is another $170 to $300 more for a comparable rig and Windows 7.

Let me know what you decide to do.
