Done it, although I had to turn Avira off after it blocked access to the hosts file and stopped it working for the first scan.
While it was running the second scan, Winpatrol suddenly chipped in by detecting changes to the Hosts file, but this time, I thought it must be something that OTL had just done so I allowed it - hope I did the right thing, though, with Avira off.

The first report:
All processes killed

Looks good. Do the following now:

  • Disable your antivirus and antyspyware software.
  • Go to the Eset Online Scanner website using Internet Explorer.
  • Do the scan according the image:
    Posted Image
  • At the end, check the box "Delete Quarantined files" and click in [FINISH]
  • It will be generated a log in C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\Log.txt
Note: If you didn't find the log.txt file in \EsetOnlineScanner\, look on \Program Files\Eset\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Post that log.

How is your computer running now? Please describe any problems you have.

Posted Image Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application.

Upgrading Java :
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE).
  • Click the "Free Java Download" button and save file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista and Win 7 users, right click on the downloaded file and select "Run as an Administrator.")

My computer seems to be running perfectly. At least, it doesn't seem to be a constant target for Trojans any more, and nothing keeps trying to change the hosts file every couple of minutes either, which is brilliant. So thank you very much for your help.
The only problem I have is that I am unable to set Firefox permanently as my default browser - it changes back to IE every time the computer is turned off, and and although I check the box 'always to check if Firefox is the default browser on startup', it is unchecked every time I switch it on.

The Java site told me I already have the latest Java (I updated it only a couple of weeks ago), but I removed the previous version from the computer

Is there anything more I could do to protect the computer than I do already? I followed the excellent 'Preventing Malware and Safe Computing' guide on this forum, and have Avira, Spywareguard, Winpatrol, NoScript, Autorun Eater, Key Scrambler, and update and scan with Malwarebytes and Superantispyware every week. I only use Firefox, and also Foxit reader. I also have Filehippo and update programmes reasonably regularly. I thought I was pretty careful, but in spite of all that, Eset found four viruses on the computer, in addition to the ones you found previously, so there must be more I could do.

Let's try to run CF now:

Posted Image Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Bleepingcomputer
ForoSpyware

Notes:
  • Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  • ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making Internet Explorer the default browser.
  • Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
  • CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
  • If you are using personal certificates I recommend you to export them before running ComboFix and save them to external media.
Please carefully follow all steps below:
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, or if you are running Vista, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes. ComboFix will now start scanning your computer for known infections. This procedure can take some time, so please be patient.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Give it at least 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please do not attach the scan results from Combofix. Use copy/paste.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Thanks, that solved the problem!

Thank you so much for all your help, I'm really grateful.

Is there anything more I ought to be doing to protect the computer to stop this happening again, or just be more vigilant about updating and running the protection I have already?

Please keep in mind that computer world does not differ much from the real life. Both are dangerous but we can avoid most risks with appropriate safety measures. Bellow I have some recommendations for safe computing.

Your logs shows that your system is clean. If you have no further issues with your computer, then please proceed with the following housekeeping procedures outlined below.

Removing the tools we used:

Reset System Restore points:

Uninstall ComboFix

Remove Combofix now that we're done with it.
  • Please press the Windows Key and R on your keyboard. This will bring up the Run... command.
  • Now copy/paste this: ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.

    Posted Image

  • Please follow the prompts to uninstall Combofix.
  • This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.
  • You will then recieve a message saying Combofix was uninstalled successfully once it's done uninstalling itself.

NEXT...

OTL Clean-Up:

  • Reopen Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Click on Posted Image
  • You will be prompted to reboot your system. Please do so.

If you still have any tools or logs leftover on your computer you can go ahead and delete those off of your computer now.

There are a few things I recommend you to do once your computer is completely clean:

Updates for Windows - One of the essentials is to keep your computer updated with the latest operating system patches and security fixes. Windows Updates are constantly being revised to combat the newest hacks and threats, Microsoft releases security updates that help your computer from becoming vulnerable. It is best if you have these set to download automatically.

How to turn on Automatic Updates for Windows:

Updates for other installed software

A common attack method for hacking attempts and malware installs is to exploit known vulnerabilities in programs that are commonly installed on a person's computer. These vulnerabilities could allow a remote user or malware developer to install malware, keyloggers, and backdoors on to your computer without your knowledge or permission.
Some of the programs that are commonly exploited include Adobe Shockwave, Adobe Reader, Sun Java, Adobe Flash, and even Windows itself. Therefore it is crucial that everyone remain vigilant as to when a security vulnerability is found in our installed programs and to update it when a security update is released. Unfortunately, no one has the time to stay on top of these updates, which can happen frequently.

I highly recommend you to install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) that can be used to scan your computer for known vulnerable programs, provide information on the vulnerability, and provide a location to an update for the vulnerable program. A tutorial on how to use Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) can be found here: Keep Software Updated with Secunia PSI.

Web Browsers - Picking the right internet browser is very important. You need to find one that suits your needs but that is also safe. All browsers listed below are far more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also have the best built-in pop up blockers.

Although, if you prefer staying with Internet Explorer I highly recommend you do this :

Make Internet Explorer more secure:
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the options Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls to Prompt, and Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
  • Next click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Tips to protect yourself against malware and reduce the potential for re-infection:

Now after all these steps, your PC will be more secure. However it is important to note that you can still get infected if you are not careful. One of the best security programs you can have is common sense. As malware gets more sophisticated, you need to be more wary. If you do get caught though and the above steps can't help prevent it, we will be here to help you out.

Stay secure and thank you for choosing GeeksToGo.

Thanks very much, a lot of very useful suggestions, two or three anti-malware programmes that I hadn't heard of and I'm very impressed with Secunia PSI! That's all a great help

Thanks for all your help,
