I asked a friend and he suggested I uninstall Norton if I had it on my computer... Let's just say it's working now

Norton, whilst not criticising it as an anti-virus from its protection point of view, does have a reputation for causing all manner of problems.

I do not know if your friend mentioned it, but the normal uninstall, using programs and features frequently leaves fragments of norton and you should use this, after the initital uninstall

Also Windows 7 is very good at managing its own systems and registry cleaners, optimizers and programs of a similar nature have no place on your computer.

The disk defrag on windows 7 is very good, and there is in my opinion no reason to use other programs. On XP and Vista, especially XP the disk defrag was like watching grass grow at times, whereas on 7 it has been vastly improved.

I do not know your general experience with managing the computer as against building it, but do not forget your image backup, that again is managed very well on Windows 7 and your repair disc.

Speaking of anti-virus protection, what software would you recommend?

You mean some of it might have survived? Sneaky Norton...

I have a pretty good idea about how to manage my system but it is from experience rather than understanding of how it actually works if you see what I mean. Most of the time I've had the problem a million times before but sometimes I stumble upon something completely new to me and I cannot derive a solution. I could just as well be trying to explain advanced quantum mechanics to a french person, in chinese...

I do not like making a recommendation as such, for one specific anti-virus

It is very much a matter of personal choice

I use Microsoft Security Essentials on three computers, the fourth is Ubuntu O/S

I find it unobtrusive, it is free, it is regularly updated.

Some do not like it and prefer Avast or Avira.

As a scan ONLY, not real time protection I do not think you can beat Malwarebytes - the free edition.

I also use Super Anti Spyware - again as a scan and clean, no real time protection.

In my opinion the ones to stay away from are Norton, AVG which was originally highly regarded by many but is no longer the original AVG by Grisoft and has become bloated and includes unwanted optimizers.

Please do not forget that out of date Java and Flash Player are two of the large security weaknesses, readily exploited.

Also please do NOT forget that image backup and repair disc, it could prove a lifesaver.
