We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP, or Service Pack 4 if you are running Win2k. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

Hi ez,

You have a nasty nail infection, and i don't mean on your fingers and toes :tazz:

We are going to hit this with a big hammer.

Firstly please create a new folder on your C drive (for example C\HJT). Install HJT into that folder and run it from there. That way it can create backups if required.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://users.pandora...chy/nailfix.zip
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Please download Cleanup from here:
Cleanup. Do not run it yet.

Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Set up PC to show hidden files.(Click link if you do not know how)
Show hidden files

Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find .Service: System Startup Service
Rightclick and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK. Exit the Services utility.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml.

Please disable microsoft Antispyware as it may interfere with what we are going to do.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.bat. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. This may take some time, so go grab a coffee. Once it finds the first issue tick the box for all. Post the log from the scan here for me.

Then please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.clicksearchclick.com/
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Service Host] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Services\{F05F889E-2A7D-4EFA-80D7-A7DE531BA125}\SVCHOST.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [spwf] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spwf.exe
O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {9A7477A6-79EB-4561-AD8D-72D09C3D13D7} - (no file) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {9A7477A6-79EB-4561-AD8D-72D09C3D13D7} - (no file) (HKCU)
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.neededware.com
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe (file missing)

There are two other entries of concern. Unless you or a system administrator have set up restrictions in internet explorer or with Spybot S&D, then also check the following

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Now using windows explorer locate and delete the following files/folders if found.

C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Services\{F05F889E-2A7D-4EFA-80D7-A7DE531BA125}\SVCHOST.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\spwf.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

Now run Cleanup

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan and active scan.

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Since I have uninstalled a squared...should I tick this to have hjt fix it?

Also, if you know.... What does the DPF stand for?
Once again, I give you major props. You have been so UNBELIEVABLY helpful...that I have just signed up to help fight the war.

Hi Again,

Yes i note you have joined Geek U.

I hope you have fun learning. One of the best ways to learn is to ask questions and you have started that one already ;)

DPF= Downloaded Program Files.

With regards to your question relating to your O16 entry, yes it can be removed in HJT, if you no longer have the program.

You also have 1 optional resource hog that you can remove, but i will let you find that yourself, now you have access to Geek U.

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. ;)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.
