Ok I have a old Gateway desktop computer Im trying to get online but it seems my OS is way outdated.So Im trying to install SP1 (yes,1) 1st & it won't connect to the internet to install.I've got the file downloaded from the Microsoft website,I just can't get it to install.I read somewhere that its possible to install w/out web.Can someone walk me through this please?

You can download the offline installable version here: Windows XP Service Pack 1a Express Install (32-Bit) for End Users

Download on another computer and burn to CD or copy to a flash drive to use on the old Gateway.

Once you have that installed you will need SP3 which is available here: Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers

Then you need to install all updates, currently around 107. The best way to do this is to leave Automatic Updates off and use Windows Update from the Start / All Programs menu. Once all updates are installed then set Automatic Updates to Automatic.
