Hi,

I am sorry for the misunderstandig. The OTL-file I downloaded has indeed an exe-extension.
However, I made a printscreenshot of the faillure message when trying to launch OTL. I copied that part of the printscreenmessage from Paint to Word because I wanted to show it to you. Then I tried to upload the word-file here but I cant do that.
This is the message

"software (0x0eedfade) on location 0x7c7e2afb"

I searched for the Windows Office in my softwarelist and found 2 parts; then I remembered several years ago, when I bought the computer from a dealer, he installed Office 2003 Pro for me. A few years later I wanted to update to Office 2007 and I bought a student home version.
However, last year I moved out of my house to another place and I have lost some things. I know it sounds silly, but I really bought an Office Home Student but cant find the cd-rom anymore.
So I dont know if I am able to repair it, if there is something wrong with it.

Today I might not answer but tomorrow I wil be back.
Thanks, it would be great if its possible to find out why I cant launch OTL.

Hi. :)

My apoligies also for the misunderstanding on my behalf

However, I made a printscreenshot of the faillure message when trying to launch OTL. I copied that part of the printscreenmessage from Paint to Word because I wanted to show it to you. Then I tried to upload the word-file here but I cant do that.

If I could view the full error that would be of help before I advise anything else...

So the screen-shot you made, send that to a zip file and then in turn attach the aforementioned zip file in your next reply.

I will now anyway going to follow your "fix-Office" advise.

No actual need to do so now but doing so will not cause any harm to your machine and or the actual installation either.

Today I might not answer but tomorrow I wil be back.

Not a problem.

it would be great if its possible to find out why I cant launch OTL.

That makes two of us! ;)

Levity aside, even though for all intents and purpose the malware removal process is nigh on complete, this particular error is best sorted in-case it ever affects any other application in the future for example.

Hi. :)

Nothing appears to be attached I'm afraid...Also no need to have downloaded/installed Winzip as XP has the feature inbuilt, so you can uninstall that.

So try sending the screen-shot to a zip file again:-

Hi. :)

OK and thank you for the upload, I have translated the actual error...

Exception in module EOleSysError OTL.exe at 000584A5. Can not find the specified module

Now as to the root cause for this I suspect either the registry or the operating system on your machine may be damaged and or for some reason unbeknownst your machine just does not like OTL for example.

However with regard to the above I am going to seek a second opinion from the developer of OTL about this particular situation.

In the mean time carry out the below for me please...

New Adobe Reader Installation:

Go here to download the latest version of Adobe Reader.

Deselect Yes, install Google Chrome - optional(unless you want the browser that is).

  • After the new Reader is installed, Open Adobe Reader X.
  • OK the license.
  • Click on Edit and select Preferences.
  • On the Left, click on the Javascript category and Uncheck Enable Acrobat Javascript.
  • Click on the Security (Enhanced) category and Uncheck Automatically trust sites from my Win OS security zones.
  • Click on the Trust Manager category and Uncheck Allow opening of non-PDF file attachments with external applications.
  • Click the OK button
New Java Installation:

  • Click here to visit Java's website.
  • Scroll down to Java SE 7u5. Click on JRE Download.
  • Check (tick) Java SE Runtime Environment 7u5 License Agreement box.
  • Click on the jre-7u5-windows-i586.exe link next to Windows x86 Offline to download it and save this to your desktop.
  • Double-click on on jre-7u5-windows-i586.exeto install Java.
Uninstall ComboFix:

  • Click on Start >> Run...
  • Now type in ComboFix /Uninstall into the and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.
  • Posted Image
Clean up tools used:

Normally we could actually use OTL to do this but that is problematic at the moment...so merely delete everything we have used during the course of the malware removal process and logs also, then empty the Recycle Bin.

Note: Do leave Erunt installed.

Hi again,

I removed all the files I used.
However, after doing that I lost the internet connection.

Actually I dont think the reason is uninstalling the tools...it was the Adobe update that gave me troubles and after that I lost the connection.

Can you give me advise how to fix the internet connection again?
Thanks in advance,

Hi. :)

Download the following to a Flash(USB) drive:-

Marker_W7_XP and a new version of ComboFix

Then transfer both to the desktop of your machine.

Leave the Marker_W7_XP.zip on the desktop for the time being as in do not do anything with it.

Run the new version of Combofix(disable your anti-virus software first). Reboot your machine manually if ComboFix does not and let myself know if the internet connection has been restored.

Hi. :)

My apoligies for the delay on my behalf....

Internet is back again

Good.

Was it Combotix that broke it?

I think so, there was a issue with uninstalling recently that the developer has since rectified. However I mistakenly thought the version we had used was not affected, my apologies about the inconvenience caused.

I also removed that last update from Adobe because I thought it was that

Feel free to reinstall it again per my prior instructions and you can also uninstall ComboFix and delete the Marker_W7_XP.zip file as we have no need for that now.

Next:

I have had a word with the developer of OTL and there is nothing to be done that can actually rectify the issue with your machine. The main reason being too actually pinpoint what is the problem is not something that can be achieved via online support but rather physical access to the machine would be required...

Unfortunately these things do happen from time to time and every machine is different and basically your machine for some unknown reason just does not like OTL. This is not a cause for concern I will further add and if in the future you ever require Anti-Malware support again merely mention about this fact and or provide a link to this topic for example.

Congratulations your computer appears to be malware free!

Importance of Regular System Maintenance:

I advice you read both of the below listed topics as this will go a long way to keeping your Computer performing well.

Help! My computer is slow!

Also so is this:

What to do if your Computer is running slowly

Now some advice for on-line safety:

Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware:

This is a excellent application and I advise you keep this installed. Check for updates and run a scan at least once per week.

Other installed security software:

Your presently installed security application, AVG Anti-Virus automatically checks for updates and downloads/installs them with every system reboot and or periodically if the machine is left running providing a internet connection is active.

I advise you also run a complete scan with this also at least once per week.

Erunt:

Emergency Recovery Utility NT, I advice you keep this installed as a means to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.

Myself I would actually create a new back up once per week as this along with System Restore may prove to be invaluable if something unforeseen occurs!

Keep your system updated:

Microsoft releases patches for Windows and other products regularly. ensure Automatic Updates is selected:-

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in Windows

You can also manually check for updates via:-

Start >> All Programs >> Windows Updates

Be careful when opening attachments and downloading files:

Never open email attachments, not even if they are from someone you know. If you need to open them, scan them with your antivirus program before opening.
Never open emails from unknown senders.
Beware of emails that warn about viruses that are spreading, especially those from antivirus vendors. These email addresses can be easily spoofed. Check the antivirus vendor websites to be sure.
Be careful of what you download. Only download files from known sources. Also, avoid cracked programs. If you need a particular program that costs too much for you, try finding free alternatives on Sourceforge or Pricelessware.

Stop malicious scripts:

Windows by default allow scripts (which is VBScript and JavaScript) to run and some of these scripts are malicious. Use Noscript by Symantec or Script Defender by AnalogX to handle these scripts.

Avoid Peer to Peer software:

P2P may be a great way to get lots of seemingly freeware, but it is a great way to get infected as well. There's no way to tell if the file being shared is infected. Worse still, some worms spread via P2P networks, infecting you as well. My advice is avoid these types of software applications.

Hosts File:

A Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your computer will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website.

Hosts file will replace your current Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.

Here are some Hosts files:

Only use one of the above!

Install WinPatrol:

WinPatrol alerts you about possible system hijacks, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission.

Download it from here.

You can find information about how WinPatrol works here.

Check your third party software is upto date:

Via the visiting the Secunia Online Software Inspector periodically.

This is a very helpful/useful set of advice from Microsoft: Microsoft Safety & Security Center

Specially for the intensive search on my computer, I am glad there is no malware and I will take note of all your advises...especially about scripts because once I was afraid I had them running on my computer.

Bye for now! THanks again! :)
