I tried your suggestion but as I already posted I got stuck with the repair tool in step 2 reporting "cannot find 'wuauclt'". I didn't continue as I wasn't sure if it's safe to go on.

I'm sure it's a validated copy, but I'll try to revalidate and your new suggestions as soon as I have a few spare minutes.

Just continue with the instructions nevermind the "cannot find 'wuauclt'"

Sorry for replying late, I was way busy and didn't find time.

Anyway I went through your whole fix. The only issue I had was:

Then download the file below install it and then reboot.
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp47501-48000/sp47845.exe

came up with "your system doesn't match the minimal system requirements" (besides the old wuauclt one)

The installation for windows 7 sp1 failed again.

Can you please create a restore point then copy the contents of the code box and call it update.reg and then save it to your desktop then right click and then select merge then reboot your machine and check to see if the service pack will install.

I tried that registry entry, it didn't fix the issue. But I got error message 0x800f081f this time

googling for 0x800f081f led me to this page: http://www.win7forum...service-pack-1/

It's german and basicly states nothing but how to recover from 0x800f081f (no description on what the error is or what the fix does).

So out of curiosity I ran the fix: "dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB976932~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.17514" as admin (cmd).

after sp1 installed just fine :)

The comp is currently updating and I've gotta run. I will report back in like 24 hours!

That is fantastic

I congratulate you.

As my colleague rockmilk said, this will be valuable to us, and to all people browsing the site.

If you can provide by any chance a brief transalation that would be so kind of you.

Here's a quick translation of http://www.win7forum...service-pack-1/

[Solution] Error 0x800f081f when installing Service Pack 1
In some cases the installation of Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 fails with error code 0x800f081f (CBS_E_SOURCE_MISSING).
This error might even appear in despite of the patches required to install the service pack could be installed successfully.

Good news is: There's a simple solution to the problem

First make sure, that this is exactly your issue. Therefore verify that the following event appears in the eventlog (Windows Logs\System) with a time signature matching a failed installation:

Log Name: System
Source: Microsoft-Windows-Service Pack Installer
Date: 17.03.2011 14:12:14
Event ID: 7
Task Category:None
Ebene: Fehler
Keywords:

Description:
Changes to an update (Service Pack für Microsoft Windows (KB976932)) failed during Service Pack installation.
Identity: Package_for_KB976932~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.17514
Error Code: 0x800f081f
Target State: 7

Furthermore in the installer log under C:\Windows\logs\CBS\CBS.log following lines should appear:

2011-03-17 14:12:11, Info CBS Calling client to resolve source, cannot find file 'TsUsbGD.sys' at path: \\?\C:\Windows\Servicing\Packages\amd64_tsgenericusbdriver.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_9872c8452ac8f816\TsUsbGD.sys

2011-03-17 14:12:11, Error CBS Exec: Failed to pre-stage package: Package_for_KB976933~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~cs-CZ~6.1.7601.17514, file: TsUsbGD.sys, source: \\?\C:\Windows\Servicing\Packages\amd64_tsgenericusbdriver.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_9872c8452ac8f816\TsUsbGD.sys, sandbox: (null) [HRESULT = 0x800f081f - CBS_E_SOURCE_MISSING]

To fix this problem, run cmd as admin and type:

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB976932~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.17514
