Cannot update to Windows 7 SP1

I dunno what it is but my family keeps messing up with their pcs. Today I found some time to visit my sister and I thought I took a quick look into her comp, found out her windows 7 was never updated.

So I tried to update it to sp1:

- Windows update, stuck at loading sp1
- So I downloaded the SP1 offline update, the installation failed with error 800B0100
- Windows System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7, downloaded the offline sp1 as it seemed and failed again with 800B0100
- Windows solution center said it repaired some things, but then again Windows System Update Readiness Tool failed at installing sp1, 800B0100
- Microsoft FixIt said it could fix some things with the windows update, yet again Windows System Update Readiness Tool failed at installing sp1, 800B0100
- The repair tool on the original Windows CD failed, as the "windows version is too new", I couldnt find a way to make an updated repair tool that would fit the pc, maybe it's the wrong way anyway

I read into various fixes but there doesn't seem to be one obvious way. I checked some of the services etc. but I was too lost to locate problems or at least find a way to analyze them. Finally I had to give up and go home. Im not sure what this is (malware?) or how to fix it.

Any help would be very very very much appreciated.

Please tell me the exact make and model of the machine in question then please provide the following logs in your next reply. :thumbsup:


Please Download FarbarServiceScanner and run it on the computer with the issue.


Make sure the following options are checked:
Internet Services
Windows Firewall
System Restore
Security Center/Action Center
Windows Update

Press "Scan".
It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Please download Download MinitoolBox and run it.


Checkmark following boxes:


Report IE Proxy Settings
Report FF Proxy Settings
List content of Hosts
List IP configuration
List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer log
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size
List Devices (problems only)



Click Go and post the result.

It's an Intel E5500 runing Windows 7 Home Edition of a local manufacturer. I don't know the exact specs. Is there a tool to determine that?

This tool should do the trick just dont paste the report here it contains sensitive info from your machine such as your windows key but it will serve the purpose of the question you asked also can you get me the requested logs please.

download and run it ...it give will give us more information
get it here...


be sure to pick the correct one

MBSASetup-x64-EN.msi is for 64 bit systems

MBSASetup-x86-EN.msi is for 32 bit systems

the scan will take a few minutes to run...when done click on the copy to clipboard located at the bottom of the page

you can open notepad and paste the results there or just paste the results in your next reply

I installed all the updates above. I checked in programs so I'm 100% sure they're all there now. But the installation of windows 7 sp1 still fails.

sorry but I didn't get your previous posts until today...
I am going to get more eyes on this as I can't figure out why the SP 1 refuses to install...
maybe they can help...

May I suggest you look firstly at this

1. http://support.micro....com/kb/2505743

2. Disable your anti-virus. I think you only have windows firewall which is configured automatically to allow updates. If I am wrong and you have another Firewall diable that OR allow updates through the Firewall as a trusted site.

3. Log on on the system admin account and try that account

Windows button, in search type cmd, right click above and run as admin. At cmd prompt type

net user administrator /active:yes

4. If that fails rename the software distribution folder. Windows will rebuild it


To rename the SoftwareDistribution folder, please try below:



1. Log on an account with administrator privileges.

2. Click the Start Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".

3. Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator".

4. In "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type in "net stop WuAuServ" (without the quotes) and press Enter.



Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully stopped before we try to rename the folder. However, if it failed, please let me know before performing any further steps and include any error messages you may have received when it failed.



5. Click the Start Button, in the "Start Search" box, type in "%windir%" (without the quotes) and press Enter.

6. In the opened folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".

7. Right-click on the folder, select Rename and type "SDold" (without the quotes) to rename this folder.

8. Still in "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type the command "net start WuAuServ" (without the quotes) in the opened window to restart the Windows Updates service.

9. Should all of that fail you will have to follow the stages on this link until and if it succeeds

I'm currently stuck with the system update readiness tool, as the one provided by microsoft has system requirements "windows 7 sp1" whereas microsoft also links me to this download even when following directions after failing to install sp1 :)

Where can I find an old version that actually works without sp1?

One new thing is, I realized the browsers on this comp are extremly slow and somewhat buggy. Pages sometimes fail to load or load very slow. I don't know if this is due to the lack of sp1 or if it's even related with the issues that prevent me from updating.

Also the computer sometimes reacts extremely slow nevertheless the taskmanager only shows 2% cpu load and like 1gb of ram used. Maybe it's just that I'm not used to such a slow computer but it really feels akward and things aren't getting better whatever I try.

Yeah, I did it all. Nothing helped. So I moved over to the microsoft fixes. Last thing I did was reseting "catroot2" contents. I then tried to reinstall once again but it still fails.

Only thing actually changed now are error codes. I first didn't remember the original one but when I checked the boards I realized that the one I had with the last 2 runs surely was different, but I didnt write it down.

I just ran it again and now I got other errors again:

- unknown error, code b7
- unknown error, code 8024200D

I can't find info's on b7, 8024200D again links me to the readiness tool. Should I just run that in despite of it requiring windows 7 sp1?
