Hey guys,

I recently opened a folder (long story) that was, in effect, a malware bomb. I can't even count how many warnings I got from Norton NIS, Microsoft's AntiSpyware, etc., but I don't think they caught everything. I've already run many Norton scans, as well as Microsoft AntiSpyware, AdAware, Spybot etc., and while they always find some things and delete them, my machine never ends up clean. Some of the more persistent bugs seem to be: P2PNetworking, Worm_Mugly.I, Worm.wurmark.c, and Windupdate. I've run so many scans I haven't been saving the logs every time, sorry.

Also, my System32 folder has disappeared from windows explorer. I can still access it in safe mode only, but it still isn't visible, I have to search for it. In a related problem, whenever I try to manually delete some of these files that Norton or the others can't, I can never find them. Even when I can get into the folder Norton claims they're in, the actual files aren't visible so I can't manually delete.

ALSO, I seem to have acquired a folder C:\Uploads. This isn't visible in windows explorer, but all the virus and spyware scans search through this folder. Watching them work, this folder apparently contains ALL SORTS of programs I never installed. What the... is this???

ALSO, regedit doesn't work. I was going to take a look for some of the registry keys that Norton recommended manually deleting for one of the viruses, and I just get an error when trying to run it. Don't know if that's related.

I'm running Windows XP Home, SP2, up-to-date as near as I can tell. Also running Norton Internet Security 2005, but I'm wondering if it's been compromised as it can't seem to delete anything!

You guys seriously rock for taking the time to help folks with problems like this; whether you can do anything for me or not, thanks for providing this service.

And now, here's my HJT logfile... if you guys don't have any ideas, I'm seriously thinking about backing up the important stuff, reformatting, and starting over!

Oh, one more thing, strangely enough: my computer actually still runs ok. No lagging, pop-ups etc.

Hi stearmandriver

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Use windows add remove program files uninstall the following:
C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Run Ewido full scan save the log.

Clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to start> run> type into the box Prefetch and delete all the files in that folder.

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure all are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Media Access] C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [fw43RQN8X] htu_qic.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run killbox and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\htu_qic.exe
C:\WINDOWS\htu_qic.exe
Let the system reboot.

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp
Please post the logs From Panda, Ewido and HJT.logWe will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.

Thanks for the reply, Thatman. I'm currently out of town for work and won't be back home (where my computer is) until Sat night. I'll follow your instructions then and post the new logs. It won't be any earlier than late sat night though, so you can forget about me for a few days, and check back whenever you get a chance after sat.

Thanks a bunch for your willingness to help...

Ok, followed all instructions (thanks again). Here's what we got:

1. Couldn't use Windows Add/Remove Programs to remove Media Access, as it isn't in the list. I actually think I removed the pieces of it in question with another scan after I posted that first HJT log, so I think it might really be gone (more on that below.)

2. Ewido scan run in safe mode. It found some cookies; see log below.

3. Prefetch cleaned.

4. Cleanmgr run; everything cleaned.

5. HJT run again offline, in safe mode. This entry:
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
was cleaned. The other two, dealing with Media Access and htu_qic, didn't turn up in this log. I do remember both of those things being cleaned by another scan (sorry, don't remember which one, I ran alot of different things) after I posted the first HJT log, so maybe they're gone. See new HJT log below.

6. Downloaded Killbox and pasted those entries dealing with htu_qic, told Killbox to remove them on reboot. It responded with the error: "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" I fervently hope you know what that means.

7. Panda and Housecall were both run. Panda found a TON of stuff and was unable to clean one piece of Adware (see log below); Housecall found nothing.

8. Also, when Panda was running, Norton found and removed W32.Spybot.Worm.

And finally, do you have any idea what this C:\Uploads folder is? It isn't mine, it contains a BUNCH of stuff I never downloaded, it's taking up a lot of space, and it also seems to contain a lot of malware. Can I just delete the whole folder?? I think I'm going to, unless you know of a reason not too. I don't like the idea that my computer is being an unwilling host to all this crap.

Looks like the Panda log got cut off, probably because it was so long. You get the idea though... all these Trojans in C:\Uploads.

Hi stearmandriver

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please download and install AD-Aware.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.
Don't run Ad-aware yet.

Reboot into Safe Mode: Click here if you don't know how to do this.

Run Ad-aware se now let it clean all it finds.

C:\Uploads.<--Delete the whole folder

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com...de_srchlft.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot as normal

Please download, install and run this disk cleanup utility called Cleanup version 4.0!: http://downloads.ste...p/CleanUp40.exe
It will get rid of any malware which may be hiding in your temp folders ( a common hiding place). You will also regain a massive amount of disk space. Here is a tutorial which describes its usage: http://www.bleepingc...tutorial93.html
Check the custom settings to your liking under options, but be sure to delete temporary files and temporary internet files for all user profiles. Also, cleanout the prefetch folder and the recycle bin. When the scan has finnished click the close button
When prompted the system will log off to let it clean out the remaining files. when the log screen shows log back on and continue the fix.

When we scan with HijackThis scan in normal mode
Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
Please post the logs From Panda virus scan and HJT.logWe will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.

I will be online most of today so lets get you cleanup today.

Hey Thatman,

Sorry I couldn't get back here until late. I don't mean to drag this out; it's just that we have a new baby at home and the only free time I get anymore is late at night. :tazz:

Anyway...

1. Ran Ad-aware, it cleaned a few things.

2. C:\Uploads has been deleted.

3. Ran HJT again, in normal mode... couldn't fix the entries you specified because they aren't there now.

4. Cleanup 4.0 removed like 118 mb.

5. Panda found one piece of adware it can't clean.

Panda log:

Incident Status Location

Adware:Adware/SaveNow No disinfected Windows Registry
HJT Log:

Hi stearmandriver

The savenow is just a useless registery entry that can do no more harm.
We will clean that later.

If you don't have much time due to baby it's not a problem I will keep your topic open for you, just let me know ok.

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [fw43RQN8X] htu_qic.exe
O23 - Service: CWShredder Service - Unknown owner - C:\Documents and Settings\JoeandMary\My Documents\Application Downloads\Computer Clean Up\CWShredder.exe (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
htu_qic.exe
Exit Explorer.Reboot as normal.

Please post the logs From Panda virus scan and HJT.logWe will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.

Hey Thatman,

1. Ran HJT; it didn't find the htu-qic.exe entry in safe mode, but when I ran it again in normal mode it DID find that entry, and I deleted it. Also got rid of the CWSshredder entry. After cleaning those two things, I ran another HJT scan and saved the log; see log below.

2. Could not find htu.qic using Windows Explorer. When I ran Killbox and entered the two htu_qic.exe paths and told it to reboot, I got the same error as before: "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" when it was scanning the registry before the reboot.

3. Ran Panda again, found just that "savenow" entry again. Logs below:

Panda Log:

Oh, and now I have a new problem: both of my CD/DVD rom drives have stopped working. This is what the device manager has to say:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

Could this have been caused by something we did here? I haven't made any other changes to my system. My driver reset tool doesn't seem to work.

Hi stearmandriver

Download this zipped file FindRK-files.zip to your desktop.
Unzip the files to your desktop
Restart the PC into safe mode
It must be ran in safe mode for it to work correctly.
Open the folder and run the RKFILES.BAT, sit back and wait untill its finished.
Restart back to a normal windows session and post the text located here C:\Log.txt please and a new hijackthis log.

Thatman,

Ok, ran FindRK in safe mode, and also another HJT scan (see logs below). I used Norton GoBack to restore to a point a couple days ago in an effort to recover my disk drives. It didn't work, but if there are other files back on my system that I was supposed to have deleted a couple days ago, that's why. Sorry 'bout that...

Also, do you think we'll be able to restore my drives without a complete Windows restore? It's not too big of a deal either way, as I already had most of my stuff backed up... I'm just wondering, do you think a system restore is the way to go? I'd rather not, since I do have some stuff NOT backed up (like a bunch of photos) and I can't burn discs now, but if that's what has to be done, I guess I might as well get to it...

Of course, if you have any ideas to try before a complete restore, I'm all ears...

Thanks again for all your help...

Hi stearmandriver

We can try this close system down open the case an disconect the ribbon form the DVD drive's reboot the system and uninstall the drivers in the hardware control panel
When done close window down shut the system of thr reconect the cables again and restart the m.

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O23 - Service: CWShredder Service - Unknown owner - C:\Documents and Settings\JoeandMary\My Documents\Application Downloads\Computer Clean Up\CWShredder.exe (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
C:\Program Files\MyWaySA<--delete the whole folder
Exit Explorer.Reboot

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run killbox and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the [b]full path of file to delete
box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes. Let the system reboot.

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
[b]Please post the logs From Panda virus scan and HJT.log
We will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.
