Dear all,

I'm currently trying to fix the very slow mother in law's laptop. It's so slow that i advised to buy a Mac. Well, that's a bridge €€€ to far.
I have used help from this forum once and it was a great help. My laptop was saved, till the backlight died.

Can some one please talk me trough the routine? It would be a great help for me and my mother in law.

What kind of computer do you have exactly??Example Compaq presario c700

Download CCLEANER
http://www.piriform....leaner/download

Just DONT us the registry cleaner function of CCleaner unless you know what you are deleting exactly!!

Then open ccleaner hit the tools button then startup second one down below uninstall then in the bottom right hand corner of ccleaner hit save to text file.Save it to your desktop and post the startup.txt here in your next reply.

Hit the start button in lower left hand corner. Then in the run box type msconfig, then hit the services tab then put a check mark in hide microsoft services what is listed there, after hiding microsoft services? Please post back to us in a vertical list.

Please download MINITOOLBOX When the box opens click save file, save it to the desktop and run it.
http://download.blee...MiniToolBox.exe

Checkmark the following boxes:

List Last Ten Event Viewer Errors
List MiniDump Files
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.
List Devices (Only Problems)
Report IE Proxy Settings
Report FF Proxy Settings
List content of Hosts
List IP configuration
List Winsock Entries

Hit Go Post Results in your reply to me.

Please download and run it on the computer with the issue.
FarbarServiceScanner
http://download.blee.../farbar/FSS.exe

Make sure the following options are checked:
Internet Services
Windows Firewall
System Restore
Security Center/Action Center
Windows Update

Press "Scan".
It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY AND POST ALL INFORMATION REQUESTED!! :)

I want to make one thing very clear DO NOT use the registry cleaner function of ccleaner!!

Dear Rockmilk,

Well, i followed the routine up to:

Go here and follow instructions on setting your hosts files back to default.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034

I used the fix it application from microsoft and on reboot Windows won't start any more. I tried safe mode with network but that failed. I tried just safe mode and that gives a black screen with a blinken cursor. I think tis laptop needs serious help. Any ideas?

I tried an earlier repair but that failed. Now even the save mode does not start. I think it's over and the patiënt has died. Or are there still options to try.

If not i'll trie to recovery some files from HD with an USB adapter.

Have you ran checkdisk run checkdisk twice. If not then please do so.I must say again that I have never ran across this issue with microsoft fix it.If you are able to get the machine running even in safemode then run the erunt program and restore your registry to the backup point I had you create.

Edit: This might help if you were even able to boot into windows. :whistling:

Please download ARCDC from Artellos.com. If you do not have your xp cd

Double click ARCDC.exe
Follow the dialog until you see 6 options. pick the version and service pack option that corresponds to your system l
You will be prompted with a Terms of Use by Microsoft, please accept.
You will see a few dos screens flash by, this is normal.
Next you will be able to choose to add extra files. Select the Default Files.
The last window will allow you to burn the disk using BurnCDCC
Your ISO is located on your desktop.

make sure in the bios the cd drive is the first boot device....put the cd in the cd drive..boot your computer....when you get to the screen that gives you the option to install or repair ...select r

when you get to the command prompt
type in chkdsk /r press enter
note the single space before the /

Chkdsk will display the specific stage it is checking as well as the percentage of completion of the stage. You cannot do anything else on your computer while chkdsk is running. When chkdsk is finished, it will automatically reboot your computer.
NOTE this can take a long time to complete..it may even appear to hang or get stuck at a certain % for a couple of hours...then complete
it may even back up and go over the same area...this is normal...let it run...there are 5 stages
WARNING... Microsoft does not recommend interrupting the CHKDSK process when it is used with the /r switch, and Microsoft does not guarantee the integrity of the disk if the CHKDSK program is interrupted.

DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER WHILE RUNNING CHKDSK or you can have severe problems...

if the above does not allow you to boot normally then try the steps below one at a time and only try the next step if you still can't boot normally...there is no need to do all the steps...just do them until you can boot up
nojoy...
boot from the cd again...
then type fixmbr press enter...reboot
no joy ....boot from the cd again...
type in fixboot press enter...reboot
nojoy...boot from the cd again...

Type in bootcfg /scan and press Enter

if it says total identified window installs: 1

Type in bootcfg /rebuild and press Enter...

It will identify your XP installation...type Y once you see this prompt.

You will be prompted to enter the load identifier...type in Microsoft XP Home Edition or Microsoft XP Professional depending on whichever version you have...press enter

You will be prompted to enter the load options...type in /fastdetect and press Enter

Type in exit and press Enter

remove the cd and Reboot

Thanks to HappyRock for the instructions.
