Hello,

My desktop PC is suddenly taking a lot longer to complete its start-up sequence, and the only way it will connect to the internet is if I do the "diagnose and repair" option for the network. Then it looks like it gets a new IP address and works just fine. Sometimes if doesn't even work when I do that. The only thing I've done recently was run Pruran Defrag. The longer start-up time began shortly after that. I have McAfee installed and it hasn't found malware, and neither did the Kaspersky online scan. I have noticed that McAfee processes seem to be taking up a lot of resources, specifically mcshield.exe and McSvHost.exe.

My desktop is running Vista SP2, has a 2.10 GHz AMD Phenom 8459 Triple-Core Processor with 4GB of RAM.

Thanks for any help.

whats the make and model number and what OS...also 32 bit or 64 bit...
start by clicking on start...type msconfig in the search box...select it from the results above...
startup tab...uncheck everything except your AV...reboot
I also recommend you use a different AV like avast or AVG...both are free and use less system resources than mcaffee

I ran msconfig and deselected everything except McAfee. There is a slight improvement in start-up time, but there is still a long delay in connecting to the internet.

again...McAfee is a huge resource hog and bogs down good systems...try downloading MSE or AVAST then uninstall McAfee and run their uninstaller tool found here...
then install whatever AV you downloaded...

There is no need to have anything starting with windows except your antivirus.

It's much better. I'm away from the PC until Friday, so I will run defrag this weekend. Should I run Puran Defrag, or just the MS defrag on the system?

first run ccleaner then run Puran ...
download this free tool...

CCleaner

Don't install any Toolbars, or other programs, should it ask you...Just
uncheck the option of installing the Yahoo toolbar....if you get
the slim version it does not have the toolbar
thats the one I recommend...

It will put a shortcut on your Desktop.

Click on CCleaner to start it....
Before first use...
Select Options then Advanced.
UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

The rest of the standard settings are fine...

Then click "Run Cleaner"

DO NOT USE ANY OF THE OTHER TOOLS...RUNNING THEM MAY CAUSE OTHER PROBLEMS

Okay, I'll do this when I get back. Please don't close this ticket until after this weekend if there's anything else I need to do.
