Months ago when there was a big storm where I live my friends basement flooded and her laptop was there and the screen now stays black. It turns on fine, just can't see anything. Is there anything she can do?

Thanks.

First thing to try is to plug it into an external monitor. Just use any monitor from a desktop and see if it give you a picture. If it does, that means there is a problem with either the screen, or possibly the cable going to it, or the backlight of the screen, which is repairable.
If it will not display on the computer monitor, then you will have to take it to a professional for diagnostics to confirm rather it's DOA or repairable.
If it is dead, and your friend has information on there that needs to be recovered, that can be done.
