sony vaio only clicks when i press start button

I have a Sony PCG 7184L laptop that when I press the power button i get a constant click from speakers but nothing else...
any ideas?
replaced external power unit thinking it was power related

do you mean you replaced the ac power adapter when you say you replaced external power
was it the exact same adapter that came with the laptop...
do any lights lite up when you plug in the adapter...
how about when you press the power button
