Here's the problem;
My PC (spec at the bottom) has suddenly started hanging randomly, to the point where nothing other than the reset button works.
It can happen whilst the computer is just playing music, or loading apps, or viewing websites....it really does seem to be whenever it feels like it
One thing though, if a website causes a hang and i reboot, the same webpage will make it hang again everytime. But if I set the privacy settings and cookies/activex etc. to max security i can view it
Again that seems a little random though
It also happens every 5 loads or so when starting Windows, this happens on the white screen with the blue loading bar at the bottom (windows 2000). It gets 2/3 through the bar then hangs........again, reset button only.
Now heres the stranger bit....I thought it could be memory as I've recently installed some more. So I downloaded and ran Memtest86 from DOS. It got to 72% then hung again. Personally I don't believe it is the memory, I think this was just another random hang because I have taken each of my memory chips out and still got crashes with all 3 (1 was original and never had problems with).
This is where I'm stuck.....memtest is from a dos load so surely nothing really loads with this to crash? Could the PSU be causing it? Or maybe it really is the memory?
Heres what I've tested:
- Virus and Spybot scan
- MemTest (crashed)
- Swapping RAM
- Disconnecting the 2 spare HDDs incase of PSU overload (?????!!)
